Oh my head!

Today was a long one.  Not really because of anything in particular at work, but because I got a migraine.  Let’s just have a show of hands when it comes to who gets them from time to time… Anyone?

Ugh.  Usually I get a little bit of warning.  With just an overall feeling- hard to explain.  And that’s when it hits.  The tunnel vision.  Oh god that could be the worst part… I’m sitting there all innocent and productive. Just sitting there working away at the computer.  Then things start to get a little fuzzy.  So I try to concentrate harder.  Which  just makes it worse.  And soon I have to look away.  And put my hands to my temples and massage. Even break out the Advil (which I only use as a last resort but I did not want to see how bad this thing could get).

Then comes the dulling pain right behind the eyes.  Yuck.  I think my boss even noticed because my mood took an instant nosedive.  Not that I get super bitchy or anything- but I just get really really quiet and go off into my own world for a while.  On the way home it started to lift.  And all that was left was a light queasy feeling that stayed with me until a little after I got home.

This, my friends, is the order of steps I go through.  They don’t happen often- maybe just once every couple of months.  But they’re brutal.  If you get them, how do you deal with them?  Is there some crazy remedy I need to try??

Once I fully recovered, it was like it never happened!  And I got to break out my Target purchase- the cheapest yoga mat I could find! The little ones were a little nervous about the mat.  Originally, they were checking it out, most likely because they thought it might be a new toy.  But then I rolled it out and they didn’t step on it once… just around it.And there’s my foot.  Not like that would entice her to get any closer… my feet are gross!  Pedicure in the near future…  I bought the mat because Jaime and Scott’s place is all hardwood.  And if I’m going to Shred while I’m staying there, I need to accessorize!  I did Level 2.  Wish I could have done  Yoga meltdown- but alas, no Exercise tv.  So I did situps and some plank moves I swiped from The Shred Level 3.  Add two mini dog walks and that’s good enough for me!

I think today I’m going on a run.  Yes, a run.  Slow and easy.  I’ve been doing a little jogging in place and jumping around to see if that “twinge” has gone away.  And I think it has!  So yes, a run is necessary. I have training to do… ;)

  2. ((hugs)) migraines are awful. i typically only get ocular ones but i got my first “real” migraine over the summer and i totally give major props to people who deal with that on a regular basis.

if you find a remedy let me know! i just try to gut my way through them, but that doesn’t work so well hah

  3. Oh no, girl! Sorry about the migraine :( I’ve never had one, but they sound absolutely brutal. Glad you’re feeling better, though.

My dog won’t step on my yoga mat either… She’ll jump over it or walk around it. Crazy pooches…

  4. Omgosh sorry about the migraine!

    Those dogs are so cute!

  5. Blech to headaches. I’ve never had a migraine (knock on wood!!), but I’ve had my runs of really dull, awful headaches. Usually due to sleep deprivation like…today. Good luck on the run! Take it easy.

  6. sorry about the migrane. yuck. My dog loves my yoga mat. He did his own “Shred” last night by taking his stuffed dog and sitting on my mat and shredded up his toy. My boyfriend said “hey look, he’s shredding too!” haha.

  7. Good luck on the run!!
Ahh migraines, I get them too. Pretty much the exact same symptoms. Except I do get REAL bitchy. I have no remedy, unfortunately. I usually just take some medicine and lay down in a quiet room for a bit, that generally helps. Migraines are truly one of the worst things EVER.
    Have a great day!

  8. Hi Amy

I don’t get migraines but I do get serious sinus headaches and some of the remedies I use are reccommended for Migraines too.

Over the counter remedy- Be Kool strips. These are adhesive gel strips that give several hours of cold to the headachey area. Designed for migraine but I find them very useful for sinus

More holistic- accupressure (that’s without needles). I’ve found this quick, easy and very effective for a variety of health problems, both as a relief and in preventing recurrance. The book “Accupressure Potent Points” is a great home first aid manual that’s easy to learn from.

    Hope that helps a bit.

  9. migraines…darn it…i have some good years and some bad years. usually i just hole up in my room and sleep. my room actually has black curtains to block any sunlight from coming in during my migraine moments…i also chugg copious amounts of ibuprofen.

one year it got really bad that i went on prescription drugs for it, but then that left me bent over the toilet bowl all day…not cool.

im glad yours went away though because i know how it feels!

  10. I’ve gotten bad migraines for the past few years. They only happen on my left side, right from the back of my eye to the base of my neck. Since becoming more active, and switching brands of birth control, it has gotten better. I take a prescription medication that… does something medical… to my migraine without being a steroid/narcotic, which usually helps. My holistic solution is eat a good dinner, get my hubby to apply pressure to my neck where it hurts, get an icepack, and head to bed.

  11. Have fun with the run!! :)

I used to get migraines daily and it SUCKED. Turned out it was an egg allergy. Extra strength Advil Migraine is the only thing that will dull the them. I still get them every now and then if Im not careful.

  12. I have never had a migraine and I can not even imagine what they are like!

Have a nice rest of your day!

  13. I definitely and unfortunately get migraines. When I’m desperate and/or want to fully function at work, I take excedrin migraine. I also have actual migraine medicine.

Hopefully you’ve never had one bad enough that you’ve thrown up. That’s pretty much the worse.

  14. Have fun on your run!!!

  15. Ugh I get migraines, before I even get the headache part I just lose all vision. I get black spots in front of my eyes and can’t see anything. That’s when I know it’s time to lay down, close my eyes, and put something over my eyes to block out the light. I got one at the gym one time and had to try and drive home with spotty vision. Not fun.

  16. Another migraine lady right here. I don’t get tunnel vision, though. My process is something like a hot flash, sudden nausea, then a debilitating headache. I typically have to go home and sleep for a few hours in total darkness with an air conditioner on (or a window open, if it’s a cooler month). Horrible! I feel for you :(

  17. OH MY GAH I HATE MIGRAINES! i get them a lot too girl. ACUPUNTURE helped me! seriously-u need to do that!! i used to throw up/not sleep/etc bc of them

  18. I don’t get migranes but my mum started to later in life and I resemble her so much I am scarred it’ll happen to me too! Hope you’re feeling much better today lady :) .

  19. Oh I feel your pain…migraines are the WORST!!! I can’t thank my Dad for inherting those! :) haha!

  20. I definitely get migrains once in awhile. Hate them! Sorry about the long day, but yay for yoga.

And good luck on your run!

  21. Oh no, migraines sound awful. I hope you get some good tips on dealing with them.

  22. I hate migraines as well. Luckily I do not get them too often.
In one of my nutrition classes I took in my grad program, the RD recommended taking magnesium. Definitely consult your Dr. before using, but she swore by it! Enjoy the run :)

  23. i got my yoga mat for 19.99. i was so proud. really wanted a brand name one but they were 99.99!!! 100$ for a mat.. im sorry, but not for this girl. hehe. mine was zellers- represent! lol

  24. migraines are the worst….and yes, you usually do get a warning before they hit-sorry :(

  25. Ugh sorry about the migraine! I’ve never had one before but my roommate gets chronic exercise-induced migraines (the worst! right?) and they do NOT look fun! Have you figured out what spurs them on? Or is it just random?
    Good luck with the run!

  26. I’ve never gotten a migraine and they seem like absolutely no fun at all!

And congrats on the running! hopefully its gone for good!

  27. Sorry to hear you have a headach… hope you are feeling better now.

  28. I’ve only had a couple migraines in my life so I’m lucky. However my sister’s friend suffered from them regularly and started seeing a chiropractor and it totally changed everything. I think he was even able to prevent them if she felt the warning signs coming up. Most insurances pay for that now, might be worth looking into! It’s weird at first to have your neck in someone’s hands but statistically its super safe. And bonus—no drugs required.

  29. eeek i don’t get migraines but i know folks who do and it just sounds horrendous. hope you feel better soon!

  30. My mom gets migranes and I know they’re awful…hang in there! :?

I’m glad the twinge is gone :D

  31. ahhh booo for the migraine! I used to get them when I was on birth control…at the same time every month. It was so terrible. Then I stopped taking it and I haven’t had one since! I don’t envy you – glad it cleared relatively quickly…

Also, I have the same yoga mat!

  32. I get migraines too, especially now that we have had such temperature fluctuations (and since my diet has been crap!). All I can do to take care of them is get home and go to bed :(
