Slow down and enjoy the rest day…

Work has been steadily busy the last week, so I feel like this week is flying by!  No complaints… but isn’t it funny how we mostly seem to wish the week away to get to the weekend?  Then wonder where the time went?  Just a thought.

I need to slow down and enjoy my coffee tea today.

I kept my eye on the weather all day yesterday.  Originally, it was supposed to be raining all afternoon.  But God seems to know and respect my training schedule, and postponed the rain until later in the night (perfect sleeping weather, btw).  It was another steady 8:30-paced run on my favorite trail.  Ok really, I just need to find myself a new trail.  On the “to-do” list this weekend…

I didn’t monitor my pace at all during- as to not obsess and psych myself out.  I know I’m slower than I was a few months ago.  Maybe some of it is nervousness.  As of late, it seems I hit that five-mile mark and my body says, “back up, bitch” and starts to crumble.  I won’t be doing that until next week, but it’s still in the back of my mind.  I can’t believe it’s already been six months since I got my first injury???  That’s an entire half a year of running… nonrunning… running… nonrunning.  Stressful to say the least.

I’m not going to baby my leg forever, though.  Someone needs to be taught who’s boss.  And that’s ME.  Maybe it was the 8:30 pace, but those three miles were almost too easy.  I’m ready for more!

And because I decided yesterday that I was a bad ass, I decided a little tread and shred was necessary.  Whats up, Level 2?  Cheer squats and a v-fly?  Please…

Ok, actually that move still sucks, but don’t bring me down.

Maybe I felt so crazy because I had a stellar dinner. It’s that “old fashioned” protein we discussed in the last post.  ;)   I was grocery shopping last night and couldn’t resist when I passed the deli counter.  I honestly don’t remember the last time I bought deli… so it was a good way to mix things up!  Turkey/spinach/mushroom wrap with zucchini and yellow squash?  Yes please!

Speaking of, thanks for all the comments!  I know that eating habits and lifestyle can be a touchy subject.  We’re all set it our own ways.  Personally, I eat meat maybe three or four times on average during the week.  It works for me.  And I know I get my protein elsewhere (the point was made that there are small amounts in a lot of the things you eat- which is true and something to consider if you’re concerned about your intake).  Some people need it at every meal.  And that’s fine.  That’s even how I grew up.  I just eat differently now.  As long as you find the balance that works for you.  That’s the important part!

And the grocery shopping… what a trip.  This is not the “healthy balance” I just mentioned… ha!  I got a random coupon to Dominick’s (the Safeway brand store around here) for $10 off if I spend $50.  “Perfect,” I thought, “I’ll stock up on the necessary stuff for Jaime’s wedding cake and get some randoms I need”.

So what did my cart look like?

Asparagus… salad mix… zucchini… squash… mushrooms… oatmeal… 2 lbs of butter… 2 large bags of powdered sugar… large carton of heavy whipping cream… 5 lbs of sugar…

I probably blew the guy’s mind.  But maybe not.  Either way.  I was laughing.  As he swiped the butter, I wanted to be like, “yeah- I’m feeding dessert to about 100 people next week- don’t judge.”  Then I realized I don’t really care that much…

Here’s to a good Thursday!  It’s actually a rest day for me, so I’m spending the night cleaning and such.  Well… maybe just the “and such” part.  We’ll see how ambitious I get.

  1. I’m so glad that your run went well! Hopefully you’ll be where you want to be in no time! It’s so hard to stop running and start again until you are back to feeling great!

Your wrap looks delicious…I always forget how simple and delicious they are and I never make them! I need to get in the habit of doing this because I love them!

  2. YAY for a good run! I am excited you are going to run a half…you are going to kill it. :)

  3. That’s great you had no problem with your run! I heard there’s a flash flood warning all day in the Chi. Hopefully your training doesn’t get rained out!

  4. I’m jealous that god respected your training schedule…it’s been pouring over here! Rudeee.

But it’s great that you’re back running again :D

  5. Cooperating weather is key for jumpstarting your training. But you’ve got plenty of time, so yay for runs that aren’t soaking wet.

I love playing the random shopping cart game. They’re the best at drug stores, where your purchase can be, like, hand lotion, chocolate covered peanuts and…wart remover. Or whatever.

  6. I had squash last night too. Loving it right now.

    Enjoy your rest day!

  7. That’s great that your run went well, Amy; enjoy your rest day today :)

I’m the same way when it comes to protein. I grew up never eating it at every single meal, and in the days that I did eat meat, it was only a few times a week anyways. I think that people are a little overly obsessed with protein, but I do admit that the whole high-protein diet fad that’s going around these days is trying to warp my little mind. Eep.

  8. You’re making the shred sound scary and exciting all at the same time!!
I’m glad you’re gonna buy yoga meltdown. Level 2 is just plain mean and I love it!
Sometimes I want to put ramdom stuff in my cart at the grocery store just to freak out the cashier. It would be fun.
They usually comment about my entirely organic food selection, but my choice of plastic over paper bags. Clearly they don’t understand those bags double as garbage bags.

  9. Haha all that butter and sugar cracks me up! I make fudge to give out as presents every Christmas and my cart sounds VERY similar. You get some strange looks..
That’s a great pace, by the way!! I was hardly that fast back in my running days. You’re going to teach your leg who’s BOSS!

  10. 8:30 pace? Oy! You’re slightly faster than me. I ran 6 yesterday around an 8:45 pace. I was hoping to go for 8, but by mile 3 I realized that my body was getting really hungry, so I cut out 2 miles.

Lakefront. That’s all I’m going to say. And food afterward is a must. There’s a good place called Nookies in Old Town where a lot of runners go afterward. Including John Bingham & Coach Jenny Hadfield

  11. Yay for a great run! That’s awesome! :)

  12. haha, i would have laughed had I rung up your groceries :)

  13. I almost choked on my grapes when I read “back up, bitch.” :) You rock that Level 2, bad ass!

  16. Haha, I love the conversation you were having in your mind with the grocery-store check-out guy! Sometimes I wish I could explain to them why I have random items in my cart…but then I realize that they probably don’t care!

  17. Hahaha i love your grocery cart! i’m sure the checkout guy did too.

  18. That’s so great for your injury-free running and the weather… Now I only wish Cleveland could accommodate me in the same way. I also wish Cleveland had a Nike store. I LOVE the Chicago Nike store!!!!! :-)

  19. I love when the weather cooperates with me and so far, it has been. Life is pretty fab right now thanks to the beautiful weather. 8)

Whenever I have random stuff in my grocery cart that I don’t eat or don’t normally eat, I’m always wondering what the cashier thinks. Sometimes I want to yell that it’s not for me.. but I think they know that and honestly, does it matter? Nope.

  20. VFly makes me want to throw my weights through the TV.

  21. You have me wanting to do a half marathon again! Thanks for your inspiration girl!

  22. Haha love the grocery store need to explain. ;)

  23. I always wonder what the grocery store clerks think about the random things that people buy. Sometimes I go to the store to get the most bizarre combination of things!
