Unexpected Wakeup Call

Good morning folks!

Check this out:Yeah.  I know.  Eggs and cottage cheese for breakfast.  Blew your mind, didn’t I?  First time in a while that I haven’t made oatmeal for breakfast.  Do you always mix up breakfast, or is there a routine you stick with? I’m trying new things this week.  Just for kicks…

And I just really wanted to break into the avocado… before it went bad.  Where’s the avocado you ask?  As the eggs were already cooking, I discovered I let the avocado get a little too ripe.  I’m pretty sure it was starting to rot.  Ugh.  Oops.  So my grand idea for a southwestern scramble with black beans, avocado, and salsa became incomplete.  I threw in some cheese on top of the eggs and black beans in attempts to make up for the loss.

“In attempts”.  It was good, just not what I had envisioned.  But I did also include coffee in today’s lineup.  It’s the Tim Horton’s that Leah sent me- and it’s so yum.  Just sayin’.

Another thing I didn’t envision?  And why I chose coffee over tea?  Waking up a sticky mess at 3:00 this morning.  When did I adjust the AC temp?  It’s hot!  What time is it?  Why can’t I see the clock?

My power went out last night.  Not sure when.  But I assume it had been a while because my apartment was well on it’s way to becoming a steam room.  Crap.

BEEP.

What the hell?

BEEP.

My fire alarm battery must be low?  And here’s how knowledgeable I am about such things- I always thought it was just battery-operated?  Apparently mine is also hooked up to the electricity as well?  Then I also started hearing one or two other fire alarms beeping in other apartments in my building.  Great…

Imagine me completely disoriented, on my phone with the electric company, and standing on a chair trying to disable the fire alarm so I don’t go completely insane at 3:00 this morning all at once.  Funny, right?  Not at the time.  The electric company estimated a four-hour delay in getting it turned on.  What?  I texted my friend Mon who was randomly awake (or at least swore she was and said I didn’t wake her up) to see if I could shower and get ready at her place if necessary.  I started freaking out about what to do with all my food if it stayed off much longer.  How late for work will this make me?  What if it doesn’t go on at all?  I had worked myself up into such a tizzy I even considered getting up at 4:30 and getting my 4.5-mile run in since I wasn’t sleeping anyways.

It kicked back on maybe a half hour later after I had gone back to bed.  I laughed about it this morning.  After the fact.  I woke up not really sure if it had happened until I saw the fire alarm sitting on the coffee table- the battery on the floor.

The only casualty of the night was my sleep intake.  Whatev.  I’ve dealt with that before.

I still mixed it up this morning by doing The Shred (Level 2) in the AM versus the PM.  It’s my later shift of work for the week, so to have a little more spare time in the evening, I’m hopefully going to start doing part of my workouts in the morning… see if it kickstarts my day.

Yesterday started stormy and rainy.  So I ran to the mall for some errands and also picked up my bridesmaid dress.  Then as I left the mall, I noticed the sun shining.  What?  It was supposed to rain all day.  That’s why I went to the mall in the first place.  And how much sun have I missed???  Has anyone else had the issue that the forecast has been wrong 6 out of days in the past few weeks?

It’s making planning a real issue.

I went home and ate my fantastic leftovers from my Friday night date with Annie.Still as good as that night.

I also felt the need to get out and enjoy the surprise nice weather.  So I did some trail walking.  And saw an alarming number of those shape-up shoes.  Does anyone else see them everywhere?  And do you think they work?  My mom has a pair, but hasn’t reported her thoughts on them.  Just a random question because I’m quite curious.

Well enjoy your day.  I’m off to a somewhat “normal” week of work- which will be a nice change of pace in comparison to last week’s craziness.  See ya later!

  1. Oh Amy…what a night! I honestly have no idea how fire alarms work. Ours randomly beeps every now and then…not sure what it means. I always ask Keith and he just shrugs. But have either one of us actually looked to see? Uh, no.

  2. Blech. Welcome to Monday, huh? Our fire alarm goes bonkers any time you toast anything, so the battery is permanently removed. Shhh. At least you got a workout in! And I’d say it’s a good call not to have gotten up at 4:30. That could have been ugly.

    • Yeah, I’ve set mine off a few times when roasting veggies- my apartment is somewhat small, so any spot for it is just poor placement.

And we ripped a battery out of one before and never fixed it for that randomn beeping noise before… but I think this time around I’ll try to replace it. Or have someone (er… maintanence) do it for me…

  3. Ooof. I’ve had nights like that before, and they make for a good laugh in the morning even if they suck at the time. Fire alarms, though? Always suck. Mine randomly beeps sometimes and I have no idea why… I should probably look into that….

You’re a brave soul for switching up breakfast. There’s only been like one day in the past year that I haven’t had oatmeal for breakfast, and it threw my whole day off. Sometimes I think I should vary it up, but why mess with a good thing?

  4. Total Phoebe moment. “FIRE ALARM?”

Somehow the cat set my alarm to go off at midnight, the little shit. So I’m right there with you.

  5. Good grief…I felt bad laughing, but seriously…you painted quite a picture. I have seen those shoes everywhere and have no idea if they work. I have a friend that is horribly overweight that wears them, but I think she is missing the point of you needing to do other stuff than just wear those shoes. I am curious if people think they work though. I hope you have a great day despite the strange morning. Oh, and black beans in your eggs really is tasty! I don’t change up breakfast…I am an oatmeal girl.

  6. What a night you had! I would have been a complete mess at 3 am!

Have a great back to normal week! Hopefully the weather cooperates and stays nice this week!

  7. Way to mix it up! I pretty much always have oatmeal for breakfast and rarely switch it up. I just love the way oatmeal makes me feel and it lasts me all morning!
Sorry about the alarm.. that sucks losing precious sleep. This year at school, there was a problem with the alarms at school and they went off three nights in a row at 4am

  8. OMG what a night!! I know NOTHING about how those things worked, I would have gone crazy!

  9. omg that is awful about the beeping! my mom refuses to replace the batteries in one of our detectors so it goes off constantly. sooo annoying!

  10. Tim Hortons is awesome! Their coffee is a Canadian staple! :)

I hate when the power goes out! I always get all panicky about waking up on time for work.

  11. Ugh those shoes are so ugly, my mom has a pair and wears them everywhere. And that would have made me so angry at 3 am.

  12. I have mixed feelings on the shape up shoes .. kinda remind me of the shoes a little boy with one shorter leg wore when I was in school

  13. I wanted to go to the freaking beach to lay out ALL weekend, but kept delaying it because of the forecast. From now on, I ignore that Tom Skilling.

  14. NO oatmeal? WTF. I play, I play. I totally forgot about the fire alarm in general, thanks for reminding me.

  15. Oh fire alarms are SO ANNOYING aren’t they! With all our technology these days we must be able to come up with a better model!

  16. I have had a similar fire alarm fiasco…and as you know, it is not the best thing to deal with in the middle of the night. I tend to stick to my tried and true favorite for breakfast…yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit and flaxseed. Yum!

  17. Ugh, fire alarms are so annoying!

Your breakfast looks good. I tend to eat the same thing every morning, mostly because I’m lazy.

  18. What a night you had. Makes me exhausted just thinking about it.

I eat the same 3 breakfasts 99% of the time. I’m boring like that.

  19. Oh dang. I always get anxious when the fire alarm rings…I’d rather not live with it! The worse is when you’re in a dorm and cooking late at night…urgh. I’m glad you got it over with by now though!

  20. my ex was a supervisor at tim hortons and i loved their coffee!! always got my fair share ;)

    <3

  21. oh my gosh youre a trooper for getting through that kind of night. i probably would have called in sick just so i could sleep in and recover for the rest of the day.

  22. I hate nights like that. There is nothing like a crazy fire alarm to eff up a night’s sleep. I would have found far less humor in it than you did.

I keep my breakfasts the same monday through Thursday, but Friday through Sunday I mix it up.

  23. so much craziness!!! good for you for laughing it off.

i never trust the weather men! i swear they are always wrong…at least in SC they are.

  24. those eggs sound good… and avocado would have been awesome. poo.

I kinda eat the same thing every day… I have First and Second Breakfast :) First a smoothie, then I work out, go for a run… Second Breakfast is where I mix it up – but generally either : egg, oats or yogurt.

  25. omg yikes!! My battery on the fire alarm went off last year and it FREAKED ME OUT haha.

As for breakfast, I never do the same thing twice. I always buy so much stuff, I look forward to using it all and mixing things up :)

  26. Oh yuck! What a rude awakening. My breakfasts tend to be pretty routine: either a Green Monster, Chocolate Cherry Bomb or variations of oatmeal. It’s all about time saving for me.

I see those Shape Ups shoes everywhere. No one has said either way if they love or hate it. There is also a flip flop version my MIL is thinking about trying.

  27. Yikes what a crazy night! I do not believe in these shape up sneaks. And excuse for people to work out even less and let their shoes do the work. And I certainly don’t beleive that Joe Montana (is that who is on the commercial) walks around in them all the time. Grrr – annoying. Curious to know what your mom thinks though.

  28. I almost always go sweet for breakfast but my options vary from oats to cereal to toast to waffles etc. Only time I like eggs is when I’m hungover..hehe :) .

  29. AHH girl what a night!! That is totally freaky girl. I hate when I wake up not knowing whats going on! LOVE the unique breakfast tho!

  30. You’re too funny – I loved that you freaked out in the middle of the night :)

I’ve seen those Shapeups – I’m convinced the only reason why those people are “shaping up” is because they are actually walking!

  31. oh i love this breakfast! i always eat oats or cereal as well but this would be a nice change of pace!

  32. Yuck, I hate it when the power goes off like that!
I always have sweet breakfasts.. I don’t know why. I love savory breakfasts but more for dinner or lunch than actual breakfast.
