Keeping Busy

Aaaahhh… sleep.  You’re just so illusive, aren’t you?

I’m catching up slowly.  A lot of yesterday was spent with some seriously droopy eyes.  Which was a bit annoying because I was extremely busy.

With what you ask (besides work of course)?

Well… I finished Love the One You’re With by Emily Griffin over lunch.  This was the first Emily Griffin book I’ve read (I hear she’s quite popular).  I really liked it.  Even though the main character entertains the idea of having an affair (tsk tsk), you really feel for her and the dilemna she’s faced with.  Oooohhhhhh… drama!  Anyone else have any thoughts to add on this one?

I also had cross training to get in.  Which proved to be difficult since I didn’t get done running errands and back to my place ready to work out  until 7:30.  :(   I really hate going that late (because I didn’t get done until 8:45), but I wanted to go!  I don’t think it messed with me too bad last night (I was THAT tired), but sometimes working out that close to bed time will keep me from sleeping.  Oh how times have changed- I used to be the late night gym rat while I was still in college at Mizzou.  Often, my roommates and I wouldn’t even get to the gym until 9:30 or 10:00.  But to be fair, I didn’t go to bed until closer to 1:00 or 1:30 every night, either.  No wonder I refused to sign up for classes that started before 9:30 in the morning…

Does anyone ever work out that late?  Or late-ish?  Do you like it?  Do you find it affects your sleep?  Do you think I could ask any more questions right now?  :)   I’m just curious in case I ever start doing longer training during the week…

I was also busy cleaning out some leftovers from the refrigerator:I guess you would call this bbq nachos?  I took some leftover chips, baked bbq chicken, corn, and mozzarella to make a mean post-workout meal.  Late night dining at it’s finest.  Clearly.

I’ve been revisiting the steel cut oats again. The trick really is to soak them overnight.  Like overnight oats.  But not eaten cold.  I can only do hot oatmeal.  So I have to warm them up and cook them for a few minutes.  Any other way just gives me the heebie jeebies.  *shudder*

Yes, I’m weird.

But I prefer to call it quirky.

Well, Tuesday is here and is going to start getting away from me if I don’t keep this short and get on it!  It’s another day that I need to be productive, so let’s hope it goes by quickly…  ;)

  1. Oh I read that book a couple of years ago – I really enjoyed it! One of my good friends doesn’t go to the gym until 11 or midnight every day! I think it’s SO weird. I could NOT work out that late!!

  2. I can only do hot oatmeal, too. I guess I’m weird, too, but if I want a cold meal for breakfast it’s going to be cereal.

As for night workouts, when I was in college I’d go to the gym at 10 pm. I never had problems going to sleep but I’m a really good sleeper. I wish I could do the whole AM workout thing, but I’m a zombie before 10.

  3. I think I might try that book out. I am in need of a good read. As far as working out…I hate doing it late! I am an early riser for exercise. I just lose momentum if I try later. I haven’t fallen in love with cold oats either. I don’t know that it is even work trying. Have a great day Amy!

  4. Her books are pretty good! Hopefully you are much for awake than yesterday and get caught up on sleep soon!

I don’t like to work out late at night either, but sometimes it has to happen!

  5. I can only do room temperature oatmeal ;) Not really a fan of the overnight oats, and I don’t like them straight off the stove either… I’m like Goldilocks, and they have to be juuuuuust right. And I enjoyed that book, but I think I preferred her book, Something Borrowed. That was the first one I read, and I liked the story a little bit more, so I’d recommend it if you like her writing style :)

I can’t do the late workout thing at. all. I wake up super early, so by the end of the day I’m running out of steam… plus the gym is a lot more crowded. My fave time to go is a little after breakfast.

  6. I ran a race in February called “Love the Run You’re With” so that’s what I think of any time I see that title. I looooove steel cut oats – those I will only eat hot, but I like other oats cold, too.

  7. Glad you liked the book! I wanted her to stay with her ex. He reminded me so much of MY ex and I just wanted them to work it out.

I rarely workout late at night, but that’s because I’m usually in bed by 9:30. Sometimes though, I will tell myself I’m taking a rest day and then decide at like 8 that I don’t want to. That’s the only time I really work out at night, and I usually sleep just fine after.

  8. I think Something Borrowed and Something Blue are Emily Giffin’s best, so I recommend them to you–I liked this last one, but not as much. Also, she was at the Lilith Fair signing books! Crazy!

  9. Haven’t read that book yet. Don’t care to work out late.

  10. totally playing catch up right now! but sleep needs to make a come back in my life too. very illusive at the moment.

and i hate working out late. maybe it’s because i have a finicky stomach and that late there’s always something in it hah

  11. I can’t workout too late…I need my down-time before going to bed. It makes me feel like a child, but hey, it works ;)

I prefer to workout right after work when my butt has atrophied from sitting all day.

As for the OO, I can eat them cold, but I LOVE hot oats. Yummmmmmmmm…

  12. I like Emily Giffin. I think Love the One You’re With was her best, but they are all cute reads. I even think Something Borrowed is being made into a movie?

I cannot workout late at night. The latest I can go is around 6pm or I won’t be able to sleep.

  13. i used to work out in the late afternoon or after dinner even but it doesnt work for me cuz then i cant sleep. walking is ok tho. but yea any running or real intense aerobic workout is best in the morning for me.

mmm i guess u could definitely call that a bbq nacho dish! <3

  14. i like working out in the morning – during the school year I don’t make it there until about 5, but i can deal with that. I cannot go after dinner. After dinner all I want to do is relax.

  15. I haven’t read any Emily Giffin before so thanks for the recommendation.

If I don’t work out in the morning it isn’t going to happen for me. I am just too tired at the end of the day, plus I have Maya and Ali around annoying me with their million and one requests!

  16. Although I have had my fair share of overnight oats (because they are fast in the morning) they just DO NOT compare to hot oats, and I am always disappointed.

  17. i have never read any emily griffin books….maybe i should? your oats look so good!

  18. I definitely prefer the evening to the morning. Mostly I don’t like to work out very late because then I always get to bed later than I meant to, especially if I have a longer workout planned for the day.

  19. I hateeeeeeee working out late at night. I get out of work at 330 and am at the gym by 430, any errands that need to be run get run all sweaty and gross after the gym. If I do anything before my workout chances are I bail on it.

  20. I work out in the morning…I need the energy boost to shake off the sleepiness! Your nachos look lovely…it’s making me want to get Mexican food tonight for dinner (I’m sure your plate is a lot healthier than what I would get at our local fav)

  21. I’ve never tried cold oatmeal but I don’t think I’d be able to do it cold. That’s why I’ve been so hesitant to try overnight oats!

  22. I used to work out late in college too. But now that I work full-time AM workouts are much preferred! I like to just get up and knock it out so it’s off my “to do” list. Oh the joys of being an adult… :)

  23. In college I also went to the gym late – like 9 to 11 pm every night!! and I’d still be able to get up at 6…

now I work out early – even if it’s later in the day I try not to be too active after like, 6pm!! I’ll go on a long walk, but nothing TOO cardio…

I am so weird about my sleep in the last year or so – paranoid that I won’t be able to get to sleep. its crazy.

  24. I’m terrible with working out late. If it’s past 7, I won’t go to the gym unless I have to. If I know I’m going to be working late, I try to get to the gym in the morning. Also not fun, but at least I get my workout in!

  25. I used to work out really late in college too and I loved it, it was so peaceful. I don’t find that working out messes with my sleep (I mean, how can you mess with it when it’s already nonexistent, haha) but since I like to be in bed between 9 and 10 the latest I’ll usually hit the gym is 7-ish – just so I can get all my routine night stuff done in time.

Wow, I really don’t think you wanted to know ALL that. Ha.

I’ve never tried steel cut oats and I don’t know why…

  26. I’ve read other Emily Griffin books, but not this one yet. I feel like she tries so make you sort of sympathize with an unlikely character. Can’t wait to read it!

  27. I seriously dislike using leftovers. I like leftovers, but I’d prefer making new things. Lately, all I’m doing is cleaning out the fridge or going out. Ah, the life of moving out….. :)

  28. I love working out in the evening but if I end up going later than 8 it does start to mess with my sleep. I need at least 2 hours after finishing to wind down ( I usually go to bed around 11).

Those nachos look pretty darn tasty :)

  29. I read that book awhile ago and liked it, but I loved the “Something Borrowed” series. I read them all!

  30. oh man i could never work out that late these days. altho i definitely did that in college! strange the way our priorities can totally change! ha. good for you for still getting that work out in. i would have said f it!

do you measure out the oats/milk you use when you soak them over night? yours look pretty creamy like the microwave didn’t really cook them per se just heated them up like you like them. i might be interested in this method! fill me/us in!

  31. I love Emily Griffen! I’ve read Something Borrowed and Something Blue and loved them both! Wha’ts up with her and writing about affairs?!

  32. i’ve also read that book, it was good but was my least favourite from Emiliy Giffin. (Something Borrowed was probably the best, imho :)

i haven’t worked out past 6pm in years, although i’m mad jealous of anyone who can. must be something you just get used to because i still see people out running at 9pm all the time! those crazy runners….:)

  33. haven’t had steel cut oats in years – i am very lazy. but the soaking method sounds promising!

  34. I havent tried cold oatmeal nor do I plan on doing so, it just seems skeevy to me.

I can only workout at night, I tried doing early morning but value my sleep in the AM. I think by the end of the day I am tired, get a second wind from working out then pass out, works for me!!

  35. im so glad im not the only one who doesnt do cold oatmeal!! HOT OATS RULE. so you suggest those oats? ive never tried em!

  36. I don’t really do cold oats either…hot is the only way to go!

  37. [...] and I was asked to give specifics about the bowl of steel cut oats I featured yesterday- I definitely measure them out (about 1/3 cup oats and a little less than 2/3 cup milk).  After [...]

  38. I really want to read that book! Would you recommend it?

  39. i’m very weird too – - i call it eccentric :)

  40. While working at my last job, I always preferred working out right after work. It was a nice little ritual. Now that I have a new job that is more grueling – mentally and physically – I think I will need to switch up to morning workouts. Besides, it’s a rewarding feeling to know that you’ve already finished working out so bright and early.
