Did you know yesterday was National Junk Food Day?
I found that one out half way through the day. How did I celebrate? Um… I didn’t. Unless you think celebrating with salad counts?
Had someone told me it was National Junk Food Day, I may have planned appropriately. Oh well…
Over lunch I started my new book- Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous by Esther Blum. The title caught my eye. Because seriously- who doesn’t want to do all three? We’ll see how it goes, though. As many “lifestyle” books as I’ve read, it’s starting to fall into the typical category. Especially the beginning, which is a rah rah rah warmup telling me about how you can eat and drink whatever you want and never to restrict yourself and this isn’t your typical diet book (which I find to be an ironic statement since they all seem to claim this). But whatever, it seems like it’ll be a fast read and maybe I’ll pick up a couple things from it. I’m not counting it out just yet.
Was supposed to run last night, but didn’t. Instead, I ran a mile and then cross trained the rest of the time with the elliptical, some free weights and a session on the stairmill. Nothing much else exciting to report there. Still being careful. Still icing the leggie-poo. (I call it that now being as how much I baby it.)
I didn’t celebrate at dinner either. Sorry guys. I’m being a health nerd up in here.
Huge. Fantastic. Salad.
Yeah, I had salad twice today. Because I was feeling uninspired it the cooking department. And I happen to actually like salad. So yeah… there ya go.
I don’t feel like I slighted myself at all.
I did, however, have a spoonful of almond butter and handful of chocolate chips. Is that getting closer to celebrating a national junk food day?
I’m counting it. Especially because then I went back for an encore with another spoonful. And even more chocolate chips. I tried to cool things down with you, nut butter. But I can’t help but love taking this casual dating to the next level every once in a while.
So my big excitement of the day (clearly there wasn’t much going on yesterday)? I got a call from the library that one of the books I’ve been on hold for came in. I’ve been really digging Russell Brand as of late. I loved his standup on Comedy Central, loved him in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and most recently loved him in Get Him to the Greek. So I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this:
You can’t read it because I took the pic in a mirror. Fail. But it’s Russell Brand’s autobiography, My Booky Wook. I like to mix it up with quirky reads like this bad boy. Hooray! So maybe if I get bored with learning how to eat, drink, and be gorgeous, I’ll take this one for a spin.
I also refuse to show you the sheer excitement on my face because I’m a gross mess in this picture and happen to currently be sporting a zit the size of Missouri on my face. Seriously- where the f did you come from?!?! Needless to say, I’m zap-zitting it up right now. Because it is soooo not invited to my birthday party this weekend.
I’m thinking I might take a rest day today. Firstly, because my shin is a little sore (the reason why I decided to keep it to cross training last night). Secondly, because I have my second round of girls coming up to visit! Last week was some good friends from high school, this week is two of my best girls from college! So, needless to say, I’ve got quite a few things to take care of after work. Plus, my long run is being rescheduled to tomorrow morning (instead of the usual Saturday), so I need to be ready for it. I decided to take a spontaneous day off tomorrow (hey it’s my birthday- I’ll do what I want!) and I’m sneaking the run in before everyone gets here. Weeee!
Now the question is- will I be up early enough to do the whole 10-maybe-11-mile run outside?
Have a good Thursday everyone!

I like Russell Brand too. My boys are really into his woman, Katy Perry. Can’t wait to hear what you think of the books. I hope your shin feels better! Enjoy your day!
If we ate the special food for every special food day, we’d all be 900 pounds and chowing down on donuts, funnel cakes, hamburgers and all that other stuff every day of the year. Celebrate my butt. It’s all a conspiracy of the fast food manufacturers! Yeah! And donut special interest groups! Good luck on your long run tomorrow. That is a sweeeeet runner nerd birthday present.
You have a point. July is National Ice Cream MONTH- and if that’s not dangerous, I don’t know what is!
Yes… my long run is a bday present to myself… ha. Won’t lie, I’ll be pretty pumped after I get it all done!
Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous…yes please!!! Let us know how that book is!
Oh, I want to know how both books turn out! Your salads look great! I could eat a salad for every meal I think! I love them!
I hope the leg is feeling great today!
Wow a long run before a Friday at work, now that is ambitious! I can’t believe I missed national junk food day! I live for junk food. I took an unplanned rest day yesterday to be a geek and play with my new electronics, totally worth it. I hope your shin feels better soon!
oh no- I have friday off. Sometimes I ramble and it confuses people… no worries. :p
But yeah- I figured with all the bday drinking/eating and such, I’d just delay the junk food celebration… lol
Aside from the fact that he wears his girlfriend’s stretch pants, there is something oddly intriguing about him. I want to hate him, but I also want to be his sex slave. Its a Catch-22.
I skipped my run this morning, heh. You gotta go with your gut on these things.
Seriously, right? I mean sure… he’s got the chicken legs which usually aren’t my thing- but he works them… lol
Yeah- rest days sometimes pop up to surprise me. I’m learning how to roll with that.
Ya know, I hated Russell Brand at first, but I’m starting to like him more and more. I’m interested to see how his book turns out.
I hate that about self-help or lifestyle books. When they start to sound alike they can be a snooze fest. The cover is gorgeous, though.
Damn marketing techniques. I’m in marketing and you’d think I’d know better… lol
Wow.. I was craving McDonalds MORE THAN YOU COULD IMAGINE yesterday, and I finally gave in. At least now I know why – and it was totally justified because I was just celebrating a holiday
LOL.
The title of his book is hilarious – I think I will have to check it out. Girl, I feel you on the state sized zits! I had to go to Clinique this past weekend and invest in their 3 step system because I keep getting a horrible one on my chin. So not cute.
Sounds like your stomach knew what was up! ha ha- happy holiday!
I never think to add nuts to my salad but what a great idea! I didn’t really celebrate either and am sort of glad I didn’t know about the holiday until today!
Oh they’re awesome to add a little crunch to your meal and give it the protein/healthy fat factor.
I do prefer peanuts- but was out and happened to have cashews on hand. Still good!
Gotta say Amy, I think your blog is one of my favorites every day!
Love that you read as much as I do and are offering up so many great new titles! Have you read any of Betheny Frankel’s books?
As for the mean ol’ zit, try Arm&Hammer brand toothpaste overnight..it’s amaze-balls
Thanks! You sort of made my day.
And no- but I should try Betheny Frankel- she seems sassy enough for me to enjoy.
Hey I just found your blog!
I totally think all of those diet books are the same. They try to suck you in by saying that this book is different, but they are all the same. Life is about balance, and you just have to find a lifestyle that works for you.
Hi!
And I couldn’t agree more. I may write my own book. I’d have a long introductory chapter like every other book and then Chapter One: Moderation is key. The end.
and today is national hammock day! sooo fitting for your day off
i celebrated with wine, if that counts.
happy birthday EVE!
Sad to say, I didn’t celebrate national junk food day either. A couple years ago, I would have been all over that! I did have some chocolate in my life though, so does that count?
The humidity outside has been enough to force the runner in me inside onto a treadmill. It’s been sad.
We’ll count it.
And yes, the humidity is what is making me skeptical about my run tomorrow- I may have to treadmill it, although I’d rather not…
I agree with these self-help books…they usually end up being the same thing.
I didn’t celebrate National Junk Food Day either! But I will be celebrating your birthday tomorrow, all the way from LA!
Happy early Birthday!
Your salads ALWAYS look so hearty with veggies! They look so refreshing…That’s how I like my salads and don’t even want dressing! Weird?
Totally not weird! I use so much less dressing than I used to- I just learned it’s more about the flavor of the stuff I put into it!
You and your ten mile runs…so impressed that you have the gumption to do it! But considering how healthy you eat, I understand how well your body must run. I didn’t celebrate National Junk Food Day either…thank goodness!
he he he… well the mileage tomorrow is definitely intimidating! Hopefully my leg keeps up!
Aww totally missed that day! I didn’t eat any junk food of any sorts that day, except the spoonful of nutella after dinner. Does that count?
i had ice cream. but i have that everyday. does that count? hahah
sending good vibes for your shin. you are a smart cookie for taking it easy
Enjoy your rest day! And if homemade pizza counts as celebrating National Junk Food day then I guess I did. And why in the world would the US need that day anyways? Its nothing new to most people.
You are so right. SO right.
I bet his book is hilarious! Youll HAVE to give us a review. Enjo y the rest day!
Oh no worries… if it’s really good you should probably expect a play by play… ha!
I had no idea it was National Junk Food Day. But then again, I tend to miss all of those special days like PB Day, Carrot Cake Day, etc… I can’t say I celebrated it, either. I had a homemade pizza and some banana bread, but those don’t exactly fit the junk food bill. It’s weird because every day used to be a junk food day for me, but now I rarely find myself craving it.
Yeah, the cravings are not near what they used to be. And when I have it sometimes, it makes me feel so yucky after…
Junk Food day? Hmm. We had fried Thursdays in my sorority house.
happy early birthday!! hope your leg heals up! man, i know what it’s like to be out with an injury (i am right now) and it’s pure TORTURE!
and i agree, salad is awesome. salad and chocolate have to be my two favourite food groups
mine too- and i think that they cancel each other out so it’s totally cool
Russell Brand is hilarious! Bizarre but enough so that he is cool. And anyone who names their autobiography “My Booky Wook” gets extra points added to their amazingness.
Yesterday was National Junkfood Day? Yeah, definitely didn’t celebrate that.. although I had some delicious vegan chocolate cake. Soo, I guess I can pretend that counts. Because it’s cake and cake is junkfoodish.
Oh,, darn, I must have missed the Junk Food Day memo, too
Ah well, there’s always next year? haha.
And hey – no shame in salads x2. I’m all about salads lately, too. SO refreshing.
Hoping the leg is feeling better soon
I celebrated Natl Junk Food Day today instead with three brownies—who knew it was an actual day?
I love the title of the first book but hate all the books that follow the mainstream. I didnt know Russell Brand came out with a book–need it!
We just saw Get Him to the Greek and I loved it!
Not worries on missing National Junk Food Day, I had some ice cream cake for you!
Yes! He was soooo good in that!
And I saw the ice cream cake you speak of… good work!
I didn’t celebrate Junk Food day either, whoops! Both of your salads look delicious – yum!
u were definitely not in celebration mode at all lol!! we’ll make it a “national whatever, who cares, eat all the yummies DAY’ .. im always the last one to be filled in on these celebrations lol, i can be clueless sometimes..
xoxo <3
i feel like a ton of those books start off that way too! Yes we can eat/drink whatever we want…I think its a great message but I feel like some people might use it as an excuse to eat mass quantities of foods other than fruits & veggies.
hope you had a nice rest day if you took one
