So I’m not the only one who hoards leftover office food, huh? Good thing we don’t all work together- I’d hate to fight you guys for it.
Because I fight dirty. And I’m not scared. Bring it.
Don’t believe me? You should. I’ve been working on my guns. Well- sort of. I’ve been loving using resistance bands during my workout as part of my cross training routine. I may have mentioned it already- but doing the front body circuit is my favorite. So I spend some time doing work on the arms, shoulders, and even the core. Loves it.
So I did that, but also hit the gym beforehand for some elliptical and stairmill time. Kept myself entertained in the workout room this time by playing “where is that cheap cologne smell coming from?”
I still don’t know.
Then I did some more bulking up. With my dinner.
90 calories a serving? Sweet… that’ll keep me full for like a whole 15 minutes! Like oh my god!
I actually took two pics of the same thing- because I caught myself doing a sweet hitchhiker’s thumb and was kinda embarrassed. Then I laughed. Try and beat that one, people! I think my thumbnail makes it look that much longer… Awesome.
But yes, we can take a minute to talk about my soup in a can. I love playing in the kitchen, and I know soup isn’t hard, but I’m just not “there” yet. I still only keep a few cans of it around as an easy option. I know it’s a bit high on the sodium end, but I don’t know what to say- I just don’t like making soup from scratch.
Anyhoo, I took the can and used it as a “base”. Then I added the goods. Like broccoli, black beans, and corn. And red chili pepper flakes. And pepper (because we know how almost all “lite” soups are pretty freakin’ bland). I must have gotten a little out of control because it was exploding out of the pot…
I SLOWLY stirred it until it was all heated up and ready to go. And then toasted an Arnold’s thin (still living on coupons from the Healthy Living Summit- holla’) with cheese on top. Because soup isn’t comfort food without cheesy bread. I don’t care what you say. I need my cheesy bread.
Voila. Just in time for Modern Family.
I have fantastic timing.
Being as how it’s Thursday, today is an official rest day for me. Again- probably for the better. I still haven’t figured out that “weird” feeling in my left leg. It doesn’t hurt. It’s just annoying me. Grrr. My real frustration comes from the fact that I’m a little over a month away from my 15k, and have yet to really log much over a 6-mile distance as of late. Gah.
Here’s something funny…
Has anyone heard of the Happy Meal Project? An artist out of New York, Sally Davies, photographed a McDonald’s happy meal every single day over a period of MONTHS.
Results? I believe she’s still doing it, but they had pictures of Day 1 compared to Day 137- with very little change of appearance. What?? (Click on the picture to be taken to the article and slideshow)
Now- let me be clear. I’m a kid who runs through the drive thru every now and then. I see nothing wrong with that. But um… I’m concerned about people who eat this every day. I mean, it looks like you could still eat the bread- which seems to be mold free after 137 days (another reason why I’m frustrated my lastest wraps purchase didn’t even last but a week!). Yikes.
Thoughts?

I think I have heard of that McDonalds project before, so weird how nothing seemed to get moldy and gross. I totally visit the drive through a few times a month. Sometimes it’s just necessary.
Agreed. This feeling usually happens around 2 AM. And is often alcohol induced. Not always, but often…
That’s disgusting. So McDonald’s meals are like Twinkies. Well, at least we know that, should a nuclear bomb ever go off, Happy Meals would survived. We’d be well-fed refugees.
Good idea. I’ll start stocking up now…
Plus, at least we’d have happy meal toys to keep us entertained.
It is just gross. I am with you, I don’t deprive my kids from the experience of trying these things, but they always regret it after the fact. Then they ask me to make my version. I think it is important to teach kids the proper ways to eat without restriction. They need to know the taste and health differences involved in the foods they eat.
Love your semi homemade soup! I do the same thing in a pinch.
i think that project is hilarious. in a bad way. but seriously, WHAT??? Everyone needs to see that.
I’ve heard of similar projects with Twinkies. That shit is nast. On the other hand, it means you can buy one on Monday, save it until Thursday when you’re hungrier, and have the same, saturated fat-laden meal with no decomposition. Yay?
I almost always add extra stuff to canned soups as well. Especially salt, which goes in the low-sodium soups.
The happy meal thing scares me. I used to work at McDonalds, and there are people that go there every single day. Usually they use the drive thru. Ick.
Also, soup is my favorite thing to make from scratch! Its so much fun, you can put anything you want in it, and its so much better than canned.
I really don’t understand how people wouldn’t get bored with that every day. No idea.
Um, that is bizarre, because my boyfriend just sent me that Happy Meal Project article yesterday. And Sarah’s right about the Twinkies–they have an exhibit at the Museum of Science & Industry where they just leave one on display and let you know how many days it’s been there, and it looks like it just came out of the box. Super-processed food gives me the heebie jeebies. It makes me feel guilty for my french fry transgressions
I’ve never liked twinkies. The spongy-ness freaks me out. I wonder if it’s like that for all Little Debbie snacks? Hmm…
I’ll still most likely go fro McDonald’s fries if they’re offered to me. So really, I’m not even sure if this project really had that much effect on me either…
i have the same hitchhikers thumb! my genetics prof in college was in love with it hahah
i agree with you about soup and not being filling. i always have a sandwich with it no matter what kind of soup it is. the best? grilled cheese and tomato soup
Sweet hitch hiker thumb – I wish mine did that!!
I don’t judge people who eat fast food, heck I worked at McD’s for 7 years! But the way that food lasts so long is freakish…….
I wonder what Cali’s In-and-Out would look like after 137 days..hmmm
When I have kids, I’m having them do it as a science project… lol
Oh lawd, Mickey D’s…no comment lol.
I love bulking up my soup! When it comes from a can it’s never very filling, but add some more veggies, beans, rice, salsa, whatever, and it becomes a pretty fabulous and lazy day kind of meal.
I can’t even look at that pathetic little McDonalds burger without feeling sick!! Lol. When I ate meat I would much rather have a big, juicy burger made at home on the BBQ then a measly little McDonalds or other fast food burger!
It’s true. That’s the “beef” I have with McDonald’s- I’d rather have a cheeseburger twice the size…
Wow, that McD’s bun has no mold on it! You can tell that the burger has dried up and shrunk (ew) but everything else looks the same…frightening. I mean, I understand why they’d put some preservatives in their food, but THAT much? Ridiculous.
I’m thinking of making soup from scratch this weekend. Dare me??
ahahaha- I dare ya! I’m considering making chili (although I’ve said that for weeks now). For some reason, I don’t really classify chili and soup in the same category… it’s a weird quirk.
I always pimp my soup when I buy from a store. I love getting the Imagine or whatever brand in the boxes, and adding craploads of veggies and maybe beans if I am going to be alone that night.
The pot usually runeth over, yes. These things happen.
That is pretty disguisting! Food of any kind that doesn’t seem to change when it’s left for a while always concerns me. It just doesn’t seem natural…

That is so gross slash very scary. I’d never heard of it until you just posted this.
Oh man. Thanks for sharing this! It is sad that a pretty high percentage of the population most likely eats at a fast food restaurant once a day, if not multiple times a week. Yowza.
Gross. Just one of the many reasons I try to avoid fast food as much as possible.
I think my hitchhicker’s thumb could beat yours. Seriously. Or maybe not. Yours is pretty intense.
I dunno… mine’s pretty crazy! That’s my hitchhiker’s thumb without any effort… I swear it’s like my thumb can do backbends.
SO absolutely disturbing!! I used to wokr at Mccd’s in high school and we had the SAME people, eating the SAME thing day in and day out. I would hate to see there insides!
I love making soup. Is that weird? I’m all about fall & winter b/c I get to make soup! So I checked out the McD’s thing. ICK!!!!!
Your hitchhiker’s thumb might be useful one day.
No- I think I’m weird for not liking making soup! lol
I wish there was some food to pilfer around here right now. I’m starving!!
I eat canned soup all the time. I like making soup from scratch but I stockpile canned soup at work for days when I don’t have anything else to bring.
Dont all the pictures look the same then? Fast food is kind of predictable, ya know?
I had to go click and see the McDonalds project for myself! I cannot believe that. Well, I can, but then again I can’t. It’s just so…wrong? And really puzzling. I mean, are there THAT many preservatives?? I hit McD’s maybe 4-5 times a year (also alcohol induced lol) and I may just rethink that next time.
Isn’t it amazing to think how many people consume McDonald’s day in and day out? It just can’t be good for your body! And I totally bulk up the “canned” soup that I buy at stores. It can make a rather boring broth turn into something quite filling and delicious. Thanks for sharing that last picture…it is removing any desire I might have for fast food.
haha yeah whenI first tried that soup i LOVED the idea of it but I was hungry legit 10 minutes later, oh well it was a good appetizer!
So yeah, life without cheesey bread? Not a life I want to be a part of, thank you very much…
For reals. Cheese + Carbs = Love
There’s a video on youtube about a woman who has a 5 yr old mcdonald’s hamburger.. and it is still identifiable. And it’s disgusting.
Are you serious?!?! I’m a little grossed out. Actually, a lot grossed out…
all i can say about the McDonald’s – that ain’t right. :p
i read the reason why McDonald’s fries don’t decay is because they have no moisture in them (no moisture means no mold can grow.) oh gosh, i don’t eat the stuff anymore, but i used to LOVE those things with sweet and sour sauce. (ANYTHING with sweet and sour sauce) ah memories….
that happy meal project reminds me of “supersize me” which, now that i think of it, was the last time i ate mcdonald’s – years and years ago!
That McDonals project is crazy! I’d never heard of that. Months and no mold? insane.
