Short-Lived Victory

So last night was my first softball game. In how many years?

Too many to count.

But my coworker insisted they needed me. So I went.

They really didn’t. But I still got to play. And am happy to report I didn’t die of heat stroke or break my face.

I actually got a few decent hits in. Woot woot!

And, oh yeah, we won 10-1 in the 5th. So it was the shortest game of all time.

However, feelings of sweet victory were short-lived. When my power went out. For the whole night.

I promptly made my way downstairs to the couch in order to not melt in my bedroom in the attic (I’m like Cinderella!).

When we called to report the outage, the estimated time of when it would come back on was 3:30.

Thank god for semi-showering last night after the softball game (i.e. quick rinse, didn’t wash hair) because it definitely was not back on when I got up for work.

So I grabbed my flashlight and started the process as best I could sans shower. This morning was pretty overcast, so even my breakfast of a cold pancake (silly microwave and its uselessness at the moment) leftover from last weekend was enjoyed in semi-darkness. Without coffee.

Thank goodness there’s coffee and air conditioning at work, because otherwise I’d just be overheated and raging.

Happy Friday! I’m crossing my fingers the power is restored sooner than later. Because I have this little birthday of mine to celebrate. And that’s hard to do without a shower. And cold adult beverages in the refrigerator.

Laters!

  1. It’s this awful weather. I was watching the news last night and they were trying to delicately brace us to the possibility that a power outage may occur very soon in NYC also.Ugh!
Hope it’s back before your birthday. A shower and cold adult beverages are necessities.

  2. I joined a co-ed league with my bf and it’s been sooo fun! I seriously hadn’t played since high school gym class, I can’t make that up…

And how did you survive with no AC and no power?! Did you ever think you’d be relieved to show up to work?! hah

  3. No power…wow…I would have died. Quite literally. I think my biggest fear in the summer is losing my AC.

  4. Whoo hoo happy birthday weekend!

  5. I hate when the power goes out. It makes life so difficult. Not even the whole getting ready thing, driving is a nightmare too.
    Enjoy your birthday weekend. :)

  6. Why is your water affected by your power going out? Never heard that one before. I’ve showered in the dark plenty of times.

  7. Whoa! We have power over by Ashland/Addison–I hope yours comes on soon, that is zero fun!

  8. Too bad about the power. So annoying. Chicago has ISSUES when it comes to power outages. So far *finger’s crossed* ours hasn’t gone out, but everyone I know has been powerless at some point in the last month. Hope yours goes back on ASAP.

And….it’s your birthday weekend?? Happy Birthday, girlie!! Enjoy!

  9. Ugh you poor girl. And you ARE like Cinderella! However if you talk to birds, it’s going to totally freak me out.
Hope you have a fab birthday weekend, expect something (hopefully) delicious early next week!! xo

  10. No fun. I took an ice cold shower right before bed last night and piled my wet hair on top of my head. It helped me stop sweating… for like a minute.

  11. If it makes you feel any better, when I came home from work last night I found that my kitchen sink had sprung a leak and had been dripping all over the counter and in the cabinet under it all day. So that was fun. Yay, birthday weekend!

  12. oh nooooo! that is my worst fear during heat waves – no AC, no refrigerator, etc. I hope it’s back on by the time you get home and especially in time for your birthday! Happy B-day weekend!

  13. Nice job!!! Way to get back into the game :) Sounds like it’s just like riding a bike ;)

  14. Funny how we were just talking about the AC at work being too cold. ;) LOL. I hope the power turns back on very soon for you! Enjoy your birthday weekend!!

  15. Ahh that sucks!! Last night my fire alarm went off at 3am and we all had to vacate the building. AND, I’m on the 10th floor so walking down those stairs half asleep was dangerous at best! I hope your power is back on after work… fingers crossed!

  16. Anytime there are balls involved and my face remains intact, is a good day for me.

  17. How crazy that we were both seized by the evil no power gods on the same day. How does the power just go out in the middle of the freaking summer? You’re worse off than me because I actually have electricity, the a/c just blew out due to the main floor not having power. The whole stairs thing though? Not okay.
I hope we both have cool, lit, microwavable lives after work today.
    Happy early b-day!!

  18. Wow you crushed the other team! I hope the power’s back on by now. Happy celebrating!

  19. Good Grief!! I’d die without the A/C…ours went out 3 weeks ago and I’m still recovering from that…

  20. ugh, its way too hot for air to be going otu!! hope its on – have a happpppy birthday weekend!

  21. Ugh – how annoying! Hopefully it was back on and nice and cool when you got home from work.
    Nice job on the game:)

  22. I have become the queen of half showers here. I used to think it was so gross, but with the humidity and the fact that my in-laws are used to having a slight wetness to them at all times, I find that showering before bed during the summer time is just a better plan. I hope you had a great day regardless of the half shower and strange night of heat and not so much sleep!

  23. These power outages are out of control. I don’t know how you slept with no A/C!!! Hope the house was an ice cube when you got home. :)

  24. what a change of events!!! omg- but hey thank God its all temporary. i would have ended up raging haha..so at least you were able to stay much calmer than others would hehe

    XOXO <3

  25. Yay for a birthday weekend! I hope you get to celebrate in some AC!

  26. I hope the power is restored! The NYC heat is ridiculous so I can only imagine how much worse it is in Chicago. I hope that your weekend wasn’t a total bust despite a lack of cold adult beverages. :)

  27. you would play softball. such a badass =)

  28. I don’t know what we would do if we lost power here. It is so hot! You are one brave chica. I hope the power came back up quickly, and I hope you had a cool and fun weekend. Much love!

  29. [...] under the tree:That would be Adler. He came to us on the day it was over 100 degrees outside, our power went off, our food all went bad due to said power outage, my birthday plans were then up in the air, our [...]
