The Aftermath

You guys tired of posts about my half marathon yet?

Yeah, me too.

I promise this is the last one.

It has been hard adjusting to being “unstructured” again now that I’m no longer in training.

Granted, that could partially be due to the fact that my appetite after Sunday’s race didn’t subside until ohhhh… about… 5 minutes ago. I really just wanted to EAT ALL THE THINGS. Not good considering I have a new Easter dress to fit myself into in a few days.

The first day (Monday), I just let my appetite fly.

And so things like this happened:At 10:00 AM.

And then again in the afternoon. I’m not proud. Because this is a time my resting body should be fueled and all, but last time I checked, Diet Coke and fritos don’t do much for muscle repair.

Ah well. It was pretty delicious…

Ironically, that picture is the exact representation of what I used to eat as dinner on my way to softball games in high school. And as breakfast in college.

Judging from what I know of these past experiences, this is not a good thing for my waistline.

So I gave myself Sunday to celebrate. And Monday to relax.

Tuesday? Well. We got serious again.

But not in a bad way.Grilled buffalo chicken is a great, and dare I say healthy, way to get that protein fix.

And instead of the deep friend mushrooms and fries from Sunday’s list of eats, I’ve been opting for roasted or raw:What? It was “Candy Wednesday” in the office. Gotta keep the balance…

Oh… and water. Lots and lots of water.

I feel like myself again!

Especially since the workouts have slowly started back up. I took two days (Monday and Tuesday) completely off. Then, Wednesday morning started with my early alarm and a trip to the gym.

Business as usual. An early morning romp at the gym. No running, but a little elliptical action for 20 minutes along with the stairmill for another 20. Still cardio, just easier on my old woman joints. ;)

Thursday was the first running day back. Nothing crazy because I’ve decided the treadmill and I truly hate each other and should not spend more than 2 miles at a time together. So 2.3 is all I did after a 15-minute elliptical warmup and the session ended with a 1-mile walk as a cool down.

Combined with a few nights of the deepest sleep I’ve had in months?

I’m feeling quite chipper. Annoyingly so.

Don’t expect it to last.

  1. Someone have a pixie stick for breakfast:) I like the energy!

Diet Coke and fritos don’t do much for muscle repair.- haha Hey, maybe your on to a new study.

Gloat, brag, boast about your race – we deserve it!

  2. Can you send some of that energy my way? Even after coffee I still feel like a zombie!

  3. This week has been ridiculous for me. First, it was the purchasing of a bag of salt and vinegar chips. Then it was hardly working out because I’m moving. If I fit through door frames by the time you land in DC, it will be a miracle.
You can talk about the half all you want though. I live vicariously through your awesomeness, since I currently have none.

  4. I drink a Diet Coke every morning for breakfast. Gotta get my caffeine fix somehow! :)

  5. I keep trying to like those BBQ fritos, I just don’t. Maybe it’s better that way. I really need to get back into running, at least a little bit. Maybe some day.

  6. Wow, I used to love those flavor twists but haven’t had them in forever! I would totally be gorging if I just ran a half, jut sayin…..

Just sayin also, I need some buffalo chicken in my life.

  7. I miss Diet Crack. Love that stuff. I’m totally impressed you’re hitting the gym already. I took LOTS of time off from cardio.

  8. I don’t think I’ve ever had Fritos. They look so fun too.

I don’t get along very well with the treadmill either. I need some quality television to make it tolerable, and even then, more than half an hour is really difficult.

  9. Chick-fil-a was a go to breakfast option in HS. You said it best, not so good for the waistline but it was great for my tastebuds!

  10. I was absolutely ravenous during and after race training. It is part of why I no longer run more than half marathon distances – my body does not adjust well to it at all!!

  11. If you can’t splurge the day or two after a big race when can you?? I think it’s the best way to do it…then you actually look forward to getting back on track shortly after :) . Glad you’ve enjoyed some treats!!

  12. Haha I’m sure one (ok, two) bags of Fritos won’t kill you, but I’m sure your body is happy to be back into the routine of healthy food! And let be honest, how in the world could you pass up Candy Wednesdays?!

    that’s what I thought. ;)

  13. Isn’t the post run feasting the reason to run a half? As well as the carb loading and extra naps, of course.

  14. I think there are instances when you have to give in to what your body is craving. I don’t know that my fitness nutrition advice would be those particular things, but my guess is that you were craving fats big time. We will call it the even steven approach since you likely burned through a good supply during your race. Enjoy the good mood! I love it when I’m chipper on a week day. Rarely happens with all the running around.

  15. Ahh so I am not the only one who is eating for 5?? I’ve seriously been eating nonstop! And the half marathon ended 3 days ago..seriously, enough haha.

Instead of fritos, I bought cheetos..the new kind…salsa and queso. Amazing

  16. I love Frito’s dipped in gauc. I know it sounds gross, but whatever, we all have our things.

  17. i don’t think there’s anything as boring as running on a treadmill. even if i have TV. the point of TV (at least the TV i watch, oh hey teen mom) is to veg out. and if i’m running i’m not vegging.

that’s my story and i’m sticking to it. congrats on your race!

  18. Fritos are amazing and do WONDERS for muscle repair. Trust me. i’m an expert on this stuff. Also, you’re my hero for getting any cardio in this week. I like to take full advantage of the week after a race and be as lazy as possible!

  19. Diet coke and I parted ways a long time ago (aka like 6 months ago) but I can tell you that Fritos are indeed great for muscle repair. Trust me – I’m an expert. ;)

  20. I usually feel so guilty after my post run feast that I’m back on the healthy food wagon the next day. But my post run feast is often a thing to behold.
