The first day or two back after a vacation or holiday is always the hardest. Or really, any span of time that includes an abnormal amount of traveling.
Your eating schedule is off. Your meals are different. Your sleep habits are out of whack. Your workouts- did they even happen?
Which is totally fine. And encouraged.
That’s what vacation/holidays are for. Relaxing. Doing something new. Not stressing out.
But after 16(ish) hours of sitting in my car just driving… and consuming half a pecan pie on my own at the ‘rents house (did I not mention that?)… and eating candy at all hours of the day (yes, this includes dessert after breakfast), I’m ready to get back to normalcy.
One of the first things I did once returning back home, was to stock up at the grocery store.
Because, as mentioned yesterday, green is important in my life.

After several visits to the library, I FINALLY was able to pick up the third and final book in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. So far it's slower than the first two in the series, but I still love it.
And speaking of, zucchini has not been a part of it in far too long. We corrected that last night with my entire dinner consisting of mostly vegetables.

Roasted zucchini, mushrooms and asparagus. I didn't eat only this. It went on another salad that was bigger and better than my lunch. Only way it could have been topped is if all of this came off the grill...
Well deserved after a long cardio session. I didn’t mean to spend the entire time on the elliptical (45 minutes), but the downward swing in temps has all of us Chicago kids running back indoors to play. And people must have had the same kind of holiday weekend I did. Because the place was packed. And I wasn’t about to gamble the chance of losing a machine in hopes of finding a different one.
I don’t like to gamble. Ironic, being as how much I love Vegas.
When eating mostly vegetables through the day, it’s important to make a conscious attempt to also have plenty of protein at some point in the day. Especially when working out. Obviously.
Vegetables have some on their own. But for what they lacked, I made up for it by adding it to breakfast.

There's also some Kashi cereal at the bottom of the bowl because it's hilarious you think that a small bowl of oatmeal would fill me up.
Any excuse for peanut butter.
You need healthy fats, too, ya know…
Sigh. Some things never change.
Because I’m curious (no really, I am and I’m not just saying that), what’s the first thing you do to get back to normal after a holiday weekend?

Buy a bottle of wine? No, is that not right? I’m not grocery shopping this week since I’m outta town the whole weekend, so I’m surviving on garbage.
It was so hard to come back to work this week! Especially after my little vacation in NYC. I still haven’t set my watch back to LA time…I’m holding on to the little things as you can see.
The first thing I do to get back to normal is attack my kid’s homework. It always puts me in a better mood knowing that the nightmare is over for the week.
OK I can’t blame you for a pecan pie – who can resist? No seriously, who?
Once you put away all your winter stuff, it gets cold again. BOO.
Sweating it out and eating veggies is typically how I get back on my routine after a vaca. Hard gym session.
ahhhhaha that’s hilarious about the mirror. I am so guilty of looking in the mirror the whole time I lift. I agree..it was so hard to get back into the swing of things but it feels great to be back in the routine!
The first thing I do is collapse in bed way earlier than I plan. Even if I do nothing while on holiday, I always feel zonked when I come back. That said, I had no holiday weekend for Easter, so things are status quo at the moment.
I try to abstain from drinking. Which is what I started last night. Today feels a little better already. Also I REALLY need to workout…
Unpacking sure helps, but I can’t say that’s the first thing I do. I supposes the real first thing I do is unload my car. Gotta get all my belongings and “get ready” stuff back in one place.
I think the first thing I do is grocery shop so that my only options are healthy.
16 hours in the car? That’s crazy. The pecan pie…not so much. Pecan pie is without a doubt my weakness when it comes to pies. So flipping good!!!
I try and jump right back into my routine after a long weekend, and I always fail. Like last night I went to bed at a normal hour, and could not fall asleep for the life of me. It sucked. Maybe if I had fit in some kind of workout that would have helped.
Try “bouncing back” to work after having 4 months off. Oye. Sooo not easy. Routine is key for me. Keep doing it and it will stick.
I eat a normal breakfast. Sounds so boring, but it helps me get back on track. No more pancakes or muffins (or chocolate)!
Laundry, and any unpacking if necessary. I am obsessive and can’t deal until all things are in their place.
My dinner looked pretty similar to yours last night, except I added in some quinoa (I needed the protein). Veggies for dinner always seem to make me feel like I’m back on track.
Lots of water is pretty key after a long weekend. And I try to get outside for something, even just a walk if it’s chilly. I find it refreshing.
Mmmm…pecan pie. I could take down a whole one by myself. Not even kidding.
I’m not good at bouncing back. It takes me like a whole week to bounce back from a weekend out of town. Don’t ask me why – there’s clearly just something wrong with me. But hitting up the grocery store and doing laundry always seem to happen first.
Girl, I’m with ya! I’m still feeling out of it! I think it’s going to take a whole ‘nother weekend for me to get back into it
I am with you – what a weekend of food!!! It does feel great to get back to healthy habits in the end…but I think you should absolutely take full advantage of the fun while it lasts
.
I hate the feeling too of returning back to routine after nice holidays… Nevertheless, I still embrace myself to face the reality. Eating lots of vege is a great start!
my first two activities are always laundry and the grocery store after a trip!
Oh I totally hear you about vacations. And I agree, these things are encouraged. I usually find myself making up for the lack of veggies as well. Sheesh, 16 hours in the car! I hope that wasn’t one way! The longest drive I’ve made is 8 hours and after a while it sure gets boring, snacks are sure to makes an appearance at least once an hour. And they aren’t all apples either.
Hahahaha I love toothpaste for dinner. Those cartoons are hilariously true.
At least you bounced back with veggies! You know how much I love veggies
