Standard Procedure

Good morning!

Now that Monday is over and the exhaustion from the weekend has subsided for us all, how’s it goin’?

Things are well in these parts. As standard procedure, the first few days following a long/busy weekend fall into a routine of sorts.

First off, sleep becomes an important focus. Not super hard to take care of. After staying up late, changing time zones, flight delays (two hours ON the plane ON the runway is quite horrendous), etc, slumber was quite easy. The last two nights have been deep and heavy sleep.

This doesn’t happen often, so please excuse me while I relish in it.

Ahhhhh….

Ok. We’re all good.

Secondly, groceries need to be acquired. As much as I didn’t want to, a stop by Trader Joe’s on the way home from the airport happened. Because a few cans of black beans and a pantry of cereal are never considered components of a balanced day all by their lonesome.

If you’re like me, you’ll be way too lazy to prep your own dinner after traveling all day, so you’ll walk (yay exercise!) to the nearby Whole Foods and zip through their salad/food bar. Sure, you still have to do it yourself. But they have considerably more options than what I would have been willing to prep in my own kitchen.

Don’t question my logic. Instead, look at all the coloooorrrrrsssss…. (or all the colors you would see- the purple cabbage, carrots, corn, and squash are still there, but hiding).

My aunt once told me, when I was a wee lil’ thing, there should always be a rainbow of colors on your plate for lunch and dinner. The rule has not been lost on me.

To me, this also should include peanut butter after dinner. Because brown is still a color to not be left out, yes?

I wonder if my aunt had a saying about having dessert every single day?

She probably did. Probably something like “don’t”. And it probably went in one ear and out the other. Sigh.

Lastly, it’s a matter of easing back into the fitness routine. We covered a lot of ground over the weekend as we walked through shops, ran through the rain, and danced our way out of the bars.

I also trekked through miles of airport terminals. Which is nothing to scoff at- not only was it tiring, but new flats were being broken in. By the time I reached my gate, said flats were filled with my blood.

Total rookie mistake. Running through O’Hare in heels may have been a better option.

Either way, I’m off on a tangent again, so let’s bring this back around, shall we?

Monday was still too early to pull out a crazy “let’s go to the gym and GO GO GO GO“. Instead, I went with “let’s go to the gym and GO”.

One “GO” instead of four. It translates to 20 minutes on the stairmill at a lower level of intensity and 1.5 miles on the tread at an easy pace.

Baby steps.

Clearly not like this…  ;)

  1. I’m impressed with your triumphant return into non-slothdom. I however, chose to drink more wine last night and eat half a tub of spinach dip. Before dinner. Lord help me.

  2. Yuck!!! Trekking through airports is never fun, but you seem to be back on track now which is what matters most!

  3. I always hit the store on the way home from a trip so I don’t have to think about what I don’t have at home to eat…which turns into pure frustration if I have to go back out. I’m glad you survived Monday! I’m hoping to accomplish something worthwhile this week…studying is going to take place all week. UGH!

  4. You’re lucky to live within walking distance to a Whole Foods…but that would probably put a dent on my wallet!

  5. My dad always said the same thing about eating as much color as you can. But he encouraged dessert too. I choose to believe he’s right on both points.

  6. I need to swing by Whole Foods soon…they really do have an awesome salad/hot bar. Although, we all know I’m usually too cheap for it.

  7. Whenever I’m gone for a weekend, a box of pasta and a can of green beans is usually all there is to come home to. Luckily, there’s also usually some peanut butter, you know, at least a couple spoon fulls.

  8. I’ve been following these procedures unknowingly. I definitely stocked up on food majorly, did as easy a workout and possible and FINALLY got a solid night of sleep last night. it may have been filled with crazy dreams, but at least it was sleep. I think I have you to thank for the success I’ve had so far. A girl needs some guidance when it comes to these things.

  9. Yeah….my Monday workout was a bit lackluster too. Judging by my current level of motivation (read:lackofit), today is likely to end similarly.

  10. New shoes on a travel day?!?!?! girl thats what flip flops are for.

  11. Love the concept of a rainbow of colors on your lunch/dinner plate. I try and use that trick if I feel like the flavor is kind of blah. As long it looks colorful it makes it more palatable!

  12. Now I just really want to go to Whole Foods for the salad bar. Hm, dinner tomorrow I think. Glad you have recovered!

  13. I’m a disaster with new shoes. I can’t help it – I always wear them too soon/too long b/c they’re just too cute not to!!

  14. I eat rainbows too! My mom said if you can get all the colors on your plate it is very healthy!!

  15. 2 hours on the runway, gross! I always manage to break in new kicks at the worst possible times.

I think Lavar Burton told me about the colors on my plate:) I digress, glad your getting settled and back to whatever the norm may be!

  16. I just love the whole foods salad bar!
But I get a little TOO excited and my bill is crazy expensive.. but so worth it!

  17. Airports are the worst…but a way to make it all worth it is a trip to the hot foods bar at Whole Foods. You should see the one in NYC if you haven’t already. Their Columbus Circle location? Will blow you away…

    Happy Wednesday Amy!

  18. The whole foods salad bar is great so many options, I end up spending way too much!

  19. Blargghhh I detest airports! Especially when I am shlepping a lot of junkkk with me, which I always have because I am amazing at over packing! Whole foods helps to replenish though, nice looking stuff you have there my friend!

  20. Brown is definitely a color! No discrimination here. Light brown like pb and dark brown like chocolate :)
