Things are changing.
And I’m all out of sorts.
But a few things have already been learned when it comes to the new work schedule.
Streamlining. It’s necessary. Turns out I used to be really generous with my morning time. Maybe even a little wasteful.
Yeah. We’ll go there. Definitely wasteful.
But it’s ok. I’m learning.
Like…
- Have the coffee pot ready to go the night before.
- Lunch is COMPLETELY packed. Not just halfway.
- Lay out workout clothes the night before so I can either jump into them super early in the morning (not quite there yet) or as soon as I get home from work. No thinking, just do it. It worked last night. And even though it was most likely hotter in the gym than it was outside, I’m glad I got my 40 minutes of cardio in.
- Spend some quick time shaving my legs every day. Missing a patch isn’t nearly as big of a deal this way. Sigh. I’m just so sexy.
- Be better at meal planning. I never understood it until now. You kids are smart.
- Also, cooking in bulk. Not just make sure there are leftovers for the next day. But maybe even for the day after that.
Which was the thought behind my Saturday evening of cooking.

Peppers and onions sautéed for about 10 minutes before the mushrooms and black olives were thrown in.
It was my one break the entire weekend and I spent it slaving away in the kitchen. What was I thinking?!?!
It’s ok. Even a baker can appreciate cooking every once in a while.
Especially when there’s dough involved.
Whoops. Does this also count as baking?
Whatever. Calzones are fun.
I just took the idea behind the chicken and artichoke calzone made last fall and divided up the dough to make three mini versions.
Easy. It’s basically just assembly.
Portable. Throw in seperate tupperware and go.
Time efficient. Not only does it take 10 minutes less to make these vs. the big one, you’ve saved yourself from making 2 seperate meals! Man, I love leftovers…
Sometimes, just sometimes, smaller is better.
Don’t quote me on that.

Haha I know what you mean about wasting time in the morning. I get so distracted (like… reading blogs.. haha) and then I realize I need to be out the door, and my hair is still wet, my lunch not packed, and my coffee waiting to be brewed…
These are things I’m trying to get the boys to understand! Although, I’m still learning that being prepared is way better than doing things as you go. Jay will have to be at school at 7am this school year. This means he is throwing off my schedule and I’m going to have to get up at 5am to workout…UGH! I’m glad you’re getting into a groove this week and I hope you’re having a great time at your new gig!
I love being streamlined, ha. I feel so out of sorts without a routine. You’re doing the right things, though. Def pack the lunch, and I always picked my outfit out the night before, too. Down to accessories. If you need to fill up your gas tank do it on the weekends. Do all food shopping and laundry then, too. And don’t even think about turning on your computer in the am! It’s a scary vortex of wasted time.
Ok at first I was gonna say, no cheese Ames? come on. thank god you remedied that situation.
Oh me too…I have to steamline but that concept is completely lost on Keith. Holy cow! That man is soooooooo slow. Ha!
I hear you on the leg shaving thing. It’s so much easier when I just get in the habit of doing it real quick every day. Then I get lazy (ahem, my husband goes out of town) and I skip a few days and it’s so much more of a pain to get it done right.
Um move over Papa John – holy awesome recipe! And look how pretty it turned out. Mine would have been a huge dough ball. MMM!
I totally waste time in the morning and then I am like “how the heck did it just take me 90 minutes to get out the door”. Brutal!
I try to do as much as I can the night before too but yet somehow I still struggle. Possibly because I am so easily distracted……
I like cooking ahead and having leftovers, but I’m not sure leftover calzones would make it far. Evening munchies? Calzone breakfast? Yum.
Fact: if I didn’t cook in bulk, I would starve to death. Sometimes, it’s just the only way to make it through the week.
Also, the other day I was walking out to my car and noticed a patch of hair near my ankle that was at least an inch long. And I wonder why Im single.
This is the first job I’ve had where I didn’t have to streamline like crazy. My first job, I worked 7-4, which I loved, but I had very little time in the morning to get things done. I got it down to a science. I’m sure you will too.
And that calzone looks so professional. I want one!
Yum, calzones. Good call! I’ve started realizing how long it really takes me to make a salad in the morning to bring to work. It’s kind of embarrassing. I think I need to start chopping in bulk.
I always wondered how you did it all in the morning. I barely have time to brush my teeth, let alone workout and get my lunch ready!
Calzones are delicious. I love how you braided the dough!
girl, i hear you on the leg shaving. as soon as i have enough discretionary income (read: never) i am getting every bit of hair that society has deemed unacceptable lasered into oblivion.
and i REALLY need to start making it a point to streamline in the morning. i have faced reality, and i am not one of those girls who should let her hair air dry. ever.
I love the idea of mini-calzones! I need to make this.
This has nothing to do with your post, but this post reminded me that you work downtown now… and my lunchdate canceled on me today. I should have texted you!
oh wow! that calzone is just beautiful! very impressive!
I am seriously impressed with your calzone braiding skills. And welcome to the wonderful world of meal/menu planning…you’ll love it
hope the new job is going amazing!
One of these days I’m going to actually get out of bed and workout in the morning.
I swear.
That calzone looks amazing!
I am in desperate need of some streamlining. My morning routine has become utter chaos. Love that calzone! I totally think it counts as baking. And man, you’ve got mad braiding skills.
Agh! Daria, yesssss!! Seriously, I think that if we lived in the same city, we’d be like, bffs.
Cooking in bulk is the best. Even though it can be boring. When I have some free time (or am procrastinating studying) I just cook up a whole bunch of chicken and vegetables and then I don’t have to cook all week!
