Progress

Remember how I said I’m really awful about how I need things planned and it’s hard to find time to meet up with other peeps?

We’re finally making progress.

Ok, well not on the planning part. Lauren and I, much like with the running kids I met up with last week, emailed back and forth for over a month trying to work something out.

We’re both clearly a big deal. Finally, we found a chill Sunday evening to spend some time relaxing and chatting at John’s Place in Roscoe Village.

I’ve visited this spot recently, and Lauren offered to meet up elsewhere, but I said NO.

Because they have a solid patio and I did not have a burger the last time. And the burgers, according to their menu where they brag about winning Roscoe Village’s Burgerfest in 2010, must be something.

So I went for it.This, my friends, is “The Cowboy”. Sharp cheddar. Carmelized onions. A lil’ BBQ Sauce. And something called “bacon jam”.

The bacon jam was what first weirded me out. But our waitress assured me it was more like a relish- just bacon chopped up really fine.

All in all, it was delicious. I expected more flavor from the bacon. But maybe the amazingness of the cheddar and BBQ had me all distracted. Who knows?

And I love that salad is a side they offer without charging extra for it. It’s a rare thing. Sad but true. I should really write Michelle Obama about this observation.

Anyway, Lauren and I had fun chatting it up about our lives, races, and mutual friends (like woah).

She’s sort of new to this particular area of the city, so hopefully that means she’ll need a partner to check out more places in the area…. I’m so selfless like that.

The meal was definitely a nice protein boost for my next few workouts. I say that mostly because I want to go back as soon as possible.

Well, that and I really have done ok in the morning workout department.

Especially since my roommate woke up earlier than I did today to catch a flight for her holiday in the sun. It left me with the ability to jump and stomp around all I wanted in front of the tv and not worry about waking her up at 5:00 in the morning.

She’s excited about her week on the beach. I’m excited because I can do The Shred in the morning and not wake her up.

There’s something wrong with this.

Either way, I need to work harder at the strength training (what’s new?) and this will help. That and going outside would have been a total downer. The humidity is a bit suffocating. But I’ll still brave it to get to the office with no complaints. I sort of have to. And the sooner I do, the sooner I’ll get to leave for the 4th of July holiday. Which isn’t nearly as exciting as it had been in recent years with an extended weekend.

Nevertheless, a day off is a day off. And I will sleep in. And lounge. And be lazy.

Ahhhh…

Have a good holiday, kids! I’ll catch ya on the flip side.

  1. Aww my UC buddy! Looks like a fun evening : )

Sidenote: on Diners, Drive ins, and Dives last night they were talking about some burger joint where all the item menus are named after heavy metal bands…something starting with K? Don’t remember. But I’m still salivating, and may fly to chicago just to eat my way through your fine city.

  2. Don’t forget to walk around your place in your undies:)

Yippee kay ya yea! I love your eats, Chicago gives you a bit of everything.

Punch this humidity in the face. My hair can’t take it.

  3. Hahaha I feel the same way when my roommates are up early, because it means I can make a smoothie and not wake them up. If they’re sleeping, I have to settle for yogurt. haha

  4. Gah that burger looks insane. And I’m so glad I don’t have to be quiet in the mornings in the summer since Brandon gets up earlier for work to try and beat the heat.

  5. progress! from one planner to another, nice work :) Hope you have a great holiday and get some good relaxing in!

  6. Now I want a burger, you bitch. Sorry, that may have been a little harsh.

  7. I’m pretty awful when it comes to arranging meet-ups with people too. It’s a problem. But hey, at least one of us is making progress (aka you :) )!

  8. I have been craving a burger..well turkey burger or veggie burger, but still..

  9. I agree…It sucks that the 4th is on a Wed this year. The worst possible day it could be on!

  10. I want to go to John’s Place again. Now. Or, you know, somewhere else. It was so nice to finally meet you!

  11. Is it weird that I think the bacon jam sounds amazing? I want that burger.

  12. Bacon jam definitely has people going nuts these days. I’ve heard more people going crazy for the phenomenon on their sandwiches. Tony got a bacon drink the other day that was not as amazing as it sounded to him in the first place. The smokiness in a drink was a little on the weird side.

    Enjoy your day off!

  13. Carmalized onions on a burger is seriously a genius idea. I want to kiss whoever thought of that combination.
    Have a happy 4th!!

  14. You could make a bacon pudding and I’d probably still eat it. I really just love bacon that much. I’m also very jealous of B’s vacation!

  15. Is there anything better than a good burger? I think not.

  16. LOL! It’s the simple things in life, Amy ;)

  17. Love a freaking burger- how American of you to eat it with bacon jam! Enjoy the day off chick!

  18. that burger + sitting outside looks like the perfect way to get ready for the 4th!

  19. pretty much anything with bacon in it is okay in my books!

  20. I live for Roscoe Village’s Burgerfest. It’s one of my all-time favorite street fests. Shockingly, I’ve never been to Jonh’s Place. Clearly, I need to get my act together. If you are ever in need of an excuse to go again – let me know! ;)

  21. Mmmmmm….burgers.

Patios are a must in the summer time and I insist on sitting outside even if its 90+ degrees out. Thats what cold beer is for right?

PS-Have you been to Uncommon Ground? I like their patio and they have awesome food.

  22. [...] started with me sleeping in past my normal wake-up call. Super!   Lauren and I go WAY back. Well. Way back to a month or so ago when we meet up for dinner and drinks. I admire her because of her excitement towards, not just [...]
