When growing up, my favorite pizza was Pizza Hut pepperoni pan pizza. My mom or dad would often bring it home after a big shopping trip in the city next to us (it was an ordeal to go because the grocery store was an hour away). It was also a frequent destination for outtings with family friends on a Saturday night. Which was super cool because I was 8 and there were the old school video games in the location we went to (score!).
When it came to toppings, I always went with pepperoni- it was the only one I liked at the time. Although my mom swears up and down I used to eat mushrooms as a toddler.
Then there was college. Where we had the pizza chain, Gumby’s, that soon became my new favorite. This was mostly because it was one of few delivery spots open at 3:00 in the morning.
I was still mostly a pepperoni-only kind of gal, but learned I could bend the rules quite easily if you offer me another Keystone Light while in the ordering process. In addition, Gumby’s was the chain that introduced me to the harmonious combination of pizza with ranch dressing. A habit I still take up on occasion, as it is sinfully delicious.
Then, after moving to Chicago, I was sure that one of the main deep dish spots was certain to strike my fancy.
There was my first experience with deep dish at Gino’s. Eh.
The Rosati’s conveniently located across from my apartment building. Eh.
Lou Malnati’s. Giordano’s. Not bad. Not bad.
What am I missing? What is going on??
After a year or two, the realization was made.
I’m just not excited over deep dish pizza.
I mean… the concept is fabulous. A literal pie of cheese and meat and more cheese? Holy wow.
But I rarely indulge unless with out-of-towners who want to try it. My preference is to just make it on my own (via Trader Joe pizza crust) for a movie night in on the weekends.
Chicago is the mecca of pizza. How is this possible that I do not have a favorite?
Then along came Piece Brewery.
My first time was about a year ago, and I never looked back. The now infamous combo of goat cheese and bacon solidified my membership card to the Piece Pizza fan club.
It may not be Chicago-style (it’s actually New Haven-style), but this Chicago spot ranks up there in my top 5.
They even have their own beer.
My heart is theirs forever.
And that is a reason why I was actually looking forward to this last Tuesday (woah- right?). My former manager and I are both pizza lovers and decided, after weeks of trying to plan something, to catch up last night after work at Piece Brewery & Pizzeria.
Funny thing is, going out to eat is a difficult thing for us. My former boss and I both talk relatively quickly and are very capable of rattling on, hopping from one subject to another with no rhyme or reason (this was the case when we worked together, as well). It makes ordering and eating quite difficult. Apologies go out to our extremely patient waiter.
Still a lover of pepperoni, I now prefer to pile the toppings on. And he’s not a big fan of red meat. So we went the vegetarian route. Mushrooms? I’m back, baby! Spinach? Why not? Olives? I love you.
They offer “white” (no sauce) or “plain” (no cheese), but I just can’t call it pizza unless sauce and cheese are involved. I’m a purist like that.
The crust is thin, but don’t think it’s not going to be filling. They load up on the toppings that fill you up. Which is awesome. Because I now have my dinner sitting in a plastic carry out box for tonight.
Too bad I didn’t carry out some of their beer while I was at it.
Because pizza without beer (or wine) is just plain wrong. I’ll remember this tonight as I warmup the leftovers.
Later, kids!
Question of the Day (or month, since I don’t do this often): Favorite pizza chain when you were growing up?

Looks delicious. I used to live blocks away but never went there!
Little Cesars was regular at our house growing up – hot pizza and the breadsticks. I’m very glad tastes have evolved!!
That’s my roommate’s old stompin’ grounds. She still loves the Little Cesar’s “hot n’ ready”.
Growing up I would have to say it was Pizza Hut, mostly because of the “Book It” program that rewarded us with a personal pan pizza for reading. So yay! Cheese and fat bombs in exchange for book consumption!
Oh we were all over the Book It Program! LOVE.
Loved that program! Forgot about that one.
LOVED Book it and Pizza Hut growing up. Then, during the steroid days, I ate an entire medium pan pizza – and breadsticks – unassisted, in one sitting. Took a break from Pizza Hut for a while. But thanks to you I’m craving it hard core at 8 am…
Now I’m a thin crust kinda gal, but someday I will try that authentic deep dish!
Thin crust love.
And damn, girl! I could put down some serious food back in the day, but that is nuts!!! I would have stepped away from pizza for a bit, too.

One of our hot lunch days in grade school was pizza hut personal pan pizzas, it was the best. Now I’m a thin crust lovah, and I told my mom to order one tonight for when I get home because VA has shitty pizza. However, I have indulged in deep dish on both visits to Chicago.
“Because pizza without beer (or wine) is just plain wrong.” <– I second this. All in favor say heck yes
So when I come to Chicago (no, I don't actually have a trip planned), you can take me here.
I would offer to take you for deep dish. But I promise you would love this equally or more so.
Flashback on Pokie sticks (Pokey? sticks)…those were awesome.
Shame on you! Deep dish is not exciting? Nommmm…loooove.
And yes pizza must have sauce and cheese.
I could still definitely get down with a Pizza Hut pan pizza! Been years since I’ve had one of those! When we were in Chicago last fall we tried Giordano’s. Loved it! And artichokes on pizza- my favorite!
omg…pokey sticks at 3:00 a.m. in college. Three nights a week. Those were the days…
We had a pizza hut in my small town, so I was a frequenter of that chain from a very early age as well. I liked cheese, and until I was about 7 or so I picked all the toppings (and even the cheese) off any pizza I was given and just ate the bread part. In college, I loved Papa John’s and a local NY style place. DC has a lot oven-fired pizza places, but that style really isn’t my fave. I do love a good veggie loaded pie though, with a beer on the side. Good choice my friend.
Monical’s was the big deal where I grew up. Until I worked there. Then I got sick of it. Although I also have fond memories of both Little Ceaser’s and a local chain called Garcia’s. I ate at Garcia’s every day for lunch my freshman year of high school.
I’m not a huge deep dish fan, either, but Pequod’s has been known to change my mind. Why oh why don’t they have a larger delivery area??
Oh my goodness, I forgot about Pizza Hut. That place was always so much fun when I was little. All the best people got to have their birthdays there, and they had a self serve drink station. That was probably the most exciting part.
Pizza Hut was the jam when I was a kid. My parents would take us there for the lunchtime buffet!! (and now they take my son!)
Mmmm…I love piece! What could be better than beer and pizza!?
Oh man, Amy, you know I’m from New Haven, and thus, any pizza in that vein makes me swoon. I love Piece! Growing up, I loved all east coast-y pizza though, because I didn’t know there could be bad pizza. Yummmm!
Also, try a white broccoli pizza from Piece sometime. You will immediately thank me.
I love Papa Johns with their garlic butter sauce. I’m sad that you don’t like deep dish. When I visit my friend on the south side, we eat Phil’s. I love the sweetness of the crust. Yummmm . . . drooling now.
Of all the times I’ve been to Chicago, I’ve never tried the deep dish, gasp!
I am a thin crust gal, so this place sounds PERFECT. And they brew their own beer, brilliant.
Oh man this looks so good. Gumby’s in college brings back some memories, and yet still makes me want Pokey Sticks, lol.
It was all about Pizza Hut growing up! Remember Book It?! I think that’s what started my obession.
I’m with you: gotta have sauce and cheese to feel like I really had pizza. Fave place/only place growing up was a very local hole in the wall my parents ordered from: Niles Pizza. Super thin.
I do love some deep dish but can count on one hand the times in a year I have it.
Pizza Hut Book It was my jam as a kid, but I’ve always really loved good pizza shop pizza. I do love to make my own, but there is nothing like a big cheesy, pepperoni-smattered pizza from one of those cardboard boxes.
Yum. I can appreciate Piece, though you know my heart is with SoNo. I haven’t been there in a while…that obviously needs to change! And YES to artichoke hearts on pizza- so good.
Oh, how I love Piece! I haven’t been there in awhile though and clearly need to change that stat. And I love artichokes on pizza – it makes me feel like I’m at least getting a vegetable in.
I’m not a huge fan of deep dish either! Glad someone else who lives in Chicago is on the same page as me ha. I still haven’t been to Piece which is really sad since I have heard so many great things about it ! And growing up my favorite pizza was Jets (well still is maybe…), but sadly they don’t have one in Chicago, only in the burbs
Pizza Hut is where it’s at! Ok, or where it was, that used to be my faborite thanks to the Book It program and going there every few weeks with the parents. I dont know what it was about their pepperoni ut it was absolutely magical. I havent been to one or had their pizza in years though and I think that needs to change.
Totally hitting up Lou Malnati’s in a couple weeks.
