How Am I Not Myself?

The title is a quote I just happen to love from I Heart Huckabees, and I think it goes great with my thoughts on what’s been going on the last few weeks.  Because it relates to this fantastic Runner’s World Quote of the Day (yes, I get those- I’m motivated by daily emails, what can I say?):

“As every runner knows, running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are.”  – Joan Benoit Samuelson

So that’s where I am.  Still haven’t been out running since the Shamrock Shuffle.  Don’t have any intention of doing so this week.  Thinking about making an appointment to see my orthopedist again next week if I can’t jog in place without feeling it.

All this makes me feel like a lazy bum as I sit on my couch.  Or maybe spend 20 minutes here and there doing abs and arms stuff.  I don’t pout (what’s the point?), but I’m not happy about it.  I think what bugs me more is the weather is starting to turn.  When I got on crutches a few months ago, I didn’t mind nearly as much.  I watched the snow fall with my leg propped up and only shrugged my shoulders slightly.  This nice weather is just becoming torture.

Running is what I do.  And I like it.  And I’m sort of decent at it.  And like the quote says, it’s part of my lifestyle.  I have an active lifestyle.  So when I can’t actually be active, I feel like I’m just not myself.  You know what I mean?  The energy level plummets along with my perky mood.  I just don’t feel “normal”.  Grrr….

Ugh.  Ok, so this is my whining post.  I’m just going to say that.  I allow myself that- just to get all the frustration out in one post.  Negativity doesn’t help the situation- I’m aware (I should be aware- I’ve given out advice to people who have gone through worse injuries).  Tomorrow I’ll be better.  Promise.  :)

How appropriate is it that I’m writing this on a Tuesday- the ick day of all days?  Ha ha…

Because Tuesday is what it is, my friend Mon and I decided to attempt to counteract that with a trip to see a movie.  Hooray! One thing I do have to say I’m excited about!  (see?  My mood is lifting already…)

Also, I got a little gift via snail mail from my friend Ashlee who visited a couple weeks ago.How cute is that?  And how sweet is she?  She knows my love of cupcakes- and even though she isn’t a big cake fan, we both appreciate making baked goods adorable.  :)  On the inside, she wrote “never forget how fantastic you are”.  This is why I love her.  She’s been there through my ups and downs and is always great about sending me a mid-day text to crack me up.  Love her!

I also love her because she said her fiance was trying to get her to memorize Fergie’s part of “Imma Be” (he likes random songs like that) to rap at their wedding.  I said no to the song, but yes to the rap- and suggested something with a bit better of a beat.  Like something by Coolio… Yeah… awesome, right?  ;)  Our hometown wouldn’t even know what hit them!

Ironically, this is one of my more “moody” posts, but Brit over at Working on the Fab Life gave me this sunshine award!  She’s a total sweetheart and is right when she says we have a similar humor- us sarcastic girls kinda rock…

I decided to hand this one out to a few peeps this time.  Just a few random ones with random reasons of why I enjoy their presence in the blogger world:

Kelly at My Verbal Vomit because we share the same love of vodka clubs.  And it’s somewhat eerie that we are often share the same train of thought…

Jess over at The Process of Healing because she is currently the coolest chic on crutches I know!

Marie at Cheaper Than Therapy because I never read her blog without cracking up.  Which may or may not have almost gotten me in trouble at work a few times… ha!

The Marathon Maiden because she is just rocking out her training for Boston!  She’s in the homestretch, so go cheer her on!

Leah over at Why Deprive? because she’s chillaxin’ Canadian-style as our neighbor from the north…  :)

I could go on and on (it’s almost obnoxious how many of you kids I have in my google reader- apparently I’m nosey and love keeping up with everyone!), but I’m keeping it short to highlight a few of you kids…

Oh and thanks for all the comments yesterday- it seems we’re all a little weary of how effective vitamins actually are, but most of us take them “just in case because it couldn’t hurt”.  Isn’t it ironic that we’re not sure of how good they really are, but we take them and put them in our bodies anyways?  You’d never do that with actual food, would you?  Just an observation…

Let’s make this Tuesday a non-crappy one, shall we?

  1. I love movies. They’re a good thing to look forward at the end of a day–what are you guys going to see??

  2. Hang in there! You’re doing the right thing of staying off it.
That is the cutest cup cake book I’ve ever seen. It actually makes me want to bake cupcakes and I don’t think I’ve ever actually made a batch!

  3. I was thinking if you had crutches again you could become the neighbor in need to that hottie you have been spotting! haha.

    • Oh you are one smart lady… the crutches are still in the back of my car… hmmm. My only concern is if karma would totally bite me in the ass and I’d actually end up needing them! But I like the way you’re thinking… :)

  4. Tuesday is an ick day..but its closer to the weekend than Monday!!

  5. Woooo thanks for my first award! And I totally agree with you now that it’s getting nicer out all I want to do is go outside and run, so I kind of chuckle evilly when it’s rainy and cold because everyone is stuck indoors with me. Is that wrong?

  6. Thanks so much for your post. It cheered me up this morning! Second, love the title. I forgot about that movie. And lastly, as someone else who lives for her workouts, I feel your pain. Hope you’re back to yourself soon!

  7. Hang in there girl! Can I just say that I am so proud of you for your attitude?! You are so positive and upbeat and I love it. You could choose to whining but you aren’t…you are someone I look up to! :)

  8. a movie will totally help make your tuesday better!

Sorry you are a bit down…you do have a great positive attitude though. youll be running again in no time.

  9. I think it is safe to say that mine has already been pretty “crappy.” (Ditto on the apologies for the bad joke.)

  10. hi sugar!!! im sorry about the down day-but you are awesome and so positive-keep up the good attitude, love, it WILL pay off :)

  11. Thanks for the award!! :)

Fortunately, the weather here SUCKS right now, so maybe I cant run, but Im ok with the whole staying out of the rain part.

  12. Aww thank you for the award!!!! I really appreciate it! And can I just say that I love your blog?! I love your sense of humor and you never fail to make me laugh :)

The cupcake book looks so cute!!! I loooove cupcakes and cakes of all kinds so I’d be all over that ha

And girl, whine to your heart’s content. You deserve a little whining. I totally understand, I feel like a bum myself. But you will be out there running again before you know it! At least you are listening to your body and not being stubborn and running through the pain, we all know that doesn’t help!

Have fun at the movies! One of my friends wants me to go see The Last Song with her tomorrow. I’m not so sure about it as 1) I don’t feel like dealing with people staring at me on crutches because I know the movies will be crowded as it’s spring break for public schools around here and 2) Romantic movies – not my cup of tea anymore and 3) Miley Cyrus annoys me to no end. She’s Out of My League sounds so funny though!

And I totally get the daily inspirational quotes too. I’m even subscribed to a quote thing on Twitter. I live for quotes. Ok not really but you know what I mean..

    Have a great day!

    • Oh yeah, the weather. I agree. It SUCKS.

    • Thank you, my dear!

I don’t know how I feel about The Last Song. It really does look cute (usually a movie I wouldn’t see in theater, but rent instead). And Miley looks like she actually doesn’t suck at acting, but I just can’t stand her either!

And I’d crutch to the movies if I were you- with the exception of your fall yesterday, I’m sure you’re getting much more comfy on them- and tell those little high school kiddies to get out of your way! ;)

  13. Awww what a great quote. Sorry you’re feeling pain with running. I’ve been having some major shin pain lately so been taking 2-4 days off running at a time and I HATE it. I get antsy by the end and just want to RUN!!!!

I hope you are back out on the pavement asap!

  14. :< Sorry about the leg…it sounds like you are hanging in there but I know this has got to be driving you batty. Maybe time to try out a few new things? Injuries can be good for new discoveries. Maybe time to join a gym and do some spin or swimming? Just throwing ideas out there.
At least try and get out there and walk this week in the supposed 80's that are coming?
    adventures in tri-ing

  15. awww thanks for the shout :)

and i don’t know about this NOT being a crappy tuesday. normally i’m all positive about them but it’s rainy and gross and i might just wallow in it hahah!

  16. Oof, it’s a Terrible Tuesday here. Rain rain rain! That cupcake book put a smile on my face from the photo alone :)

And you’ll be back to running in no time. Think how awesome that first real seasonal run will feel!

  17. Let’s make this Tuesday non-crappy…I like that. I’m in. Also, I know how FRUSTRATING injuries can be. I get in a complete funk when I can’t run – and I feel your pain. Hang in there, girl. :-)

  18. I love that quote!

I do feel like running (exercise in general really) is more than just what I do. It is part of who I am.

I know it’s hard to have to give up something that you love for a time, but you are doing the right thing to heal properly and not make it worse. Hang in there!

  19. I Heart Huckabees is one of my favorite movies of all time. Love it.

Sorry about the bum mood, I completely understand. Not being able to run is the pits. Hopefully you’ll be healed up soon though!

  20. Ugh. I know the feeling of being unable to do what you think of as “you” (sounds like a Hallmark card. Sorry.) Not sure what your injury is, but at least you’re not running yourself into the ground and hurting yourself more, right?
And amen to the ickiness of Tuesday. It’s pouring rain and my ass is making a cast-iron butt print on my desk chair. Lovely.

  21. Vent away my dear! Sorry you’re bumming. What a nice sentiment from your girlfriend.

  22. Hey honey…finally added you to my blogroll…sorry it took me so long!! :)

  23. Awww we’re all allowed to have whiney days, no worries!

  24. Sorry to hear about your non self feelings. I just ran last night after a two wk hiatus and feel somewhat better but was just lazy so I hope you feel like yourself soon.

And what a cute book, that would totally make my Tuesday better :)

  25. Congrats on the award, Amy!! You deserve it!
I think it’s completely understandable to feel frustrated and down about your running right now. But you know that it is a passion of yours and it holds a very special place in your life. You are a runner and you will run again. Just not this minute. You have every right to feel down. I loved your guest post about this topic- so honest and you really offered good advice about dealing with it in the best way.
I love the cupcake book too! I think I need that!

  26. what a fun looking recipe book! i bet you could make a lot of cute critters out of that book… have fun baking!

ugh so sorry about your running status.. it would be terrible to not be able to do something you love. good luck with the shoes/jogging in place

  27. I love quotes, and that running quote is so fitting!

I want to see She’s Out Of My League too…looks funny, and I love Jay Baruchel (the star). For the fellow Canadians, he was a child star on this show called popular mechanics for kids…for all of us dorks that watched it. Maybe that was just me. Anyway, hope you have fun!

  28. I love that quote, it’s totally true. I hope you get to feeling better. My feet are barking this week and I’ve been taking it easy, if it’s any consolation! I hope I can meet up with you guys in Chicago!!

Congrats on the award – it is much deserved :)

  29. Boo to being hurt! Injuries really can get you down. Sounds like your head is in a good place though. How sweet of your friend ho know just what you needed, just when you needed it!
Hang in there! (and have a cupcake – they always lift MY mood!

  30. This is exactly how I felt when I got a stress fracture last summer. Be strong though! Get in to cross-training! At least go outside and enjoy the weather. You will heal :)
