Family Dinner: Teaching Edition

First things first. It really needs to be said that I really heart when people google search the phrases “too legit to quit” and “cereal hoarder” to get to my blog. I doubt there are two phrases able to describe me any better.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of this post. I just wanted to say it.

Last night, my roommate and I made a journey over to Megan’s house for one of our regular “Family Dinners“. We started them late last summer and it’s nice to get together every other month or so to catch up somewhere other than a noisy bar on a Saturday night.

In other words, we’re like old women. I’m surprised we haven’t also set up a quilting circle yet.

It’s just a matter of time.

But that’s neither here nor there.

Why I mention our latest get together is this-

Megan was teaching me how to prepare salmon. As you all probably know (or you may not- try not to beat yourself up about it), I’m straight up terrified of the whole cooking fish thing. Even if it’s one of my favorite things to eat. So as a way to complete my new years resolution, Megan agreed to teach me her ways.Dun dun dunnnnn…..

Or at least she thought she was teaching me how. That or I just tricked her into making me dinner…

Check out that shaking action. It’s all in the wrist.

Actually, she did make it seem easier than I had worked it up to be in my head. Keep the seasoning simple. Broil for 6-8 minutes. Check to see if it flakes. Pair with brown rice and broccoli.Done and done and done.

Does this mean I actually have to make it next time? Crap.

We skipped dessert, but had a 20-minute conversation about favorite candy from our childhood and the holidays. Does that count?

*Mine was 100 Grand and robin eggs (Easter), by the way.

Because I know you were wondering.

Anyway, I’ve got work to do and a snowstorm to avoid, so I shall leave you now with a big HAPPY FRIDAY!

  1. Twix! And for holiday candy, definitely Peeps…..jk. Does anyone like those? Anyway, have a good weekend!

  2. I don’t eat much seafood, but when I do, cooking it gives me anxiety. I’ve cooked the life out of scallops and shrimp many times. But at least I know they won’t kill me when I eat them. :)
Oh, and I love when people will talk with me about food from my youth. I always loved mini eggs. Oh. And pop rocks. You can’t beat pop rocks.

  3. I think you guys need to skype me in next time you have one of these dinners so I can experience this without flying to Chicago. I mean, I’ll totally be drinking and eating too so it will feel like I’m right there!

  4. Those are my exact favorite candies. Also, that salmon looks delightful to me.

  5. I was in a bad way last night after you guys left- I came thisclose to leaving the house to find a candy bar. Also, can you really say that you tricked me into making you dinner when there were exactly two steps to the salmon and YOU brought it? Who’s the sucker now? :)

  6. I used to cook salmon for this guy I dated (who was a health freak despite never cooking anything… odd…) and it always scared me! For some reason fish is so intimidating for me! But I’m starting to consider being a pescatarian… so maybe I’ll get over it ;)

  7. Cooking fish isn’t too scary, but I was the same way for a time. I just don’t really dig salmon and it’s usually the cheapest, quality fish at the stores so I rarely cook fish because I’m cheap. I love a good fleshy white fish like seabass or halibut when I can afford it.

  8. I’m jealous of your snow storm again. Do you think I can be part of “family” dinners from WI?

  9. That salmon looks like it’s done perfectly!
Oh man, I haven’t had (or seen!) a 100 grand in way too long. My fave’s Twix. Always has been!

  10. Salmon seems scary but it’s SO easy! It was actually one of the first things I learned how to make perfectly, courtesy of Food Network!

  11. I actually have a salmon recipe where you make it in the microwave! It’s super easy and really hard to screw up. Here’s the recipe:

  12. I think I cried the first time I cooked fish because I picked up the wrong kind from the grocery store and actually had to debone it a little. Ick!

    Be safe out there!

  13. Very similar to my recipe, only I use a grill pan first for 3-5 minutes to get a nice flavor, then flip it and bake on 450 for another 5-7. Just olive oil, salt, and pepper. Perfection.

  14. I love salmon. Actually, there aren’t many fish I don’t like. Sounds like a fun night with friends.

  15. I’m so in love with salmon right now. I can’t get enough! I fell in love when a girlfriend cooked it for me!
    Have a great weekend, Amy!

  16. Mmmmm, now I want fish filets for dinner and all I have is a fridge full of pierogi and sour cream. Those look awesome and I’d be willing to make cupcakes or cookies again in exchange for some fishy cakes. Just say the word my friend.

  17. Oh and fave childhood candy…. Me: lemonheads and nonpareils, Scott: without knowing why I was even asking he also says 100 Grand and junior mints. Great minds and all that good stuff.

  18. ahh cannot beat that! Thats like the ONLY thing I know how to cook haha

Hope you are staying warm and away from the nasty snow!

  19. Sounds like a fun get together. I love getting with our friends and having a relaxing dinner. Have a great weekend Amy!

  20. I dig the family dinner night thing-it’s seems like a fun (and cheap) way to catch up, eat and be with friends. Every Tuesday at work we have a lunch club where someone brings lunch for the rest of us (four people total), it’s a fun way to mix it up with meals plus sit down and enjoy it instead of barely taking a lunch.

  21. […] as we drove home from family dinner a week ago, we were amused by all the people out and about asked “geez- how do they do it […]
